A) Don't do weddings.

B) Buy a film camera and learn the basics... or at the very least, buy a Rebel series body.

I say 5DII. If the guy has dough, why not. Because EVENTUALLY he will get a FF like most of us.

The reason I say film is that you don't get the instant gratification and endless amounts of shots with no consequence...

I think that if people are paying for film and developing, their skill will either improve much faster as the expenses increase, or they will get tired of the time and money spent and give up.... which would cut down on the amount of Craigslist/Facebook photographers charging for horrible pictures.

If you have the money 5dII is a great camera if not 7d pretty decent. However, you going to lust for a full frame eventually so the 5d II might be better plus you want to do weddings. Invest in some quality glasses also!

You're a beginner who's gonna shoot weddings and parties, and you ask this question? Hmm...

Go with the 5D II, it should work very well for what you want to do.

Going pro photographer is not an easy thing. If you're just starting out and have zero experience with photography in general you might want to think long and hard about whether you want to drop $1000-2000 on the camera and then a huge chunk more on lenses. Not to mention that it is a whole other thing to get clients.

I think you'll be happy with either camera. They're both fantastic. Read through these forums and you'll learn the strengths and weaknesses of each of these cameras.

Do you already have wedding work booked? How are you entering this market as a beginner? To each his own, but...I've been shooting (in addition to a ton of reading) for 6-7 years, and I wouldn't dream of doing a wedding.

Good luck with everything!

I dont know enough (anything) about wedding photography to advise you correctly. You might want to try the camera section of the forum to get an idea of the models Canon has to offer and what people are using them for.

Also try the wedding photography sub-forum in the "Talk about Photography" forum to get an idea of what you may want or need.

Good Luck!
