For me the versatility gained by the VC (particularly for video) offsets any marginal gain in sharpness obtained in using the non VC. My main gripe with the VC is the noise made when VC is on (when compared to IS). As for the Sigma in my local Bricks n Mortar shop the Sigma 17-50mm OS costs £600 compared to £345 for the Tamron VC. Valuewise the Tamron VC or Non VC is hard to beat.

I use a 17-50 VC on my Rebel and am very happy with it. It focuses well and is VERY sharp on what it focuses on stopped down. Wide open it is still plenty sharp.

Bump….Looking for a travel lens. I’m wanting something low aperture, and wide angle for building shots, and night shots. It’s coming down to this lens and or the new Tamron 24-70, but not sure I want to dump that kind of change on a lens as I’m not a pro shooter, and rarely even touch my camera. BUT….Hitting Spain this summer, so I want some good pics! (50D body)
