I have been in contact with the seller. He is selling a large amount of stuff which I will list further down. He does not know anything about photography as he inherited all of this stuff from the passing of his step father. He couldn't really tell me anything about the lens in the email but did supply a phone number and agree to meet at Starbucks later in the week as I am out of town on business. I agree that you need to be cautious with this stuff. I bought my 40D on CL (met at Panera bread) and couldnt be happier. I plan to offer 1000 bucks take it or leave it.

I have cameras and lenses to sell together or seprately. They were used by a professional but great for professional or amateur use!

Chris, first off, the lens is included. second, thats too much for the lens, simple as that, unless its under a year old, under warranty, and comes with box.
believe it or not, much better to buy from an ameture, as the equipment is generally in better shape with less use. I stand by what I said. unless you can pick it up for 1100, walk away, and I dont know if I would even pay that much for it.
by the way, everything he has on there is over priced.

Kevin, I said in my post 1000 is my top. I would like to start at 750 and go from there. I would though pay 1250 if he threw in the 60D body.....

Make exchange at police station :)

This ^^^...seriously. If the guy hesitates in the slightest bit or tries to dodge that meeting place, I'd run the other way on this transaction.

^^That is just silly^^ You're not destined to own a 100-400 at any point in the future starting at $750. You wouldn't get my great condition 100-400 for less than $1200.

I don't see how anyone can fairly judge the price as there is no description of the condition of the lens. Canon White L's hold their value very well and last I checked this lens goes for ~$1650+ new. That being said, I don't think the price is that far out of line. It isn't like you're wearing out the glass with use after all.

LOL. each person has their own negotiation style, and I guess the guy may be desperate. if I listed something for 1250 (1300 with the hood) and received an offer of 750, I would not even acknowledge it. but what ever works for you. I would certainly bring to his attention that the hood is an included accessory. Then I would ask if he has a box or receipt or any other stuff, and if the answer is no, gives you ammunition for negotiation. I would offer 1000 off the bat, and have about 75 dollar wiggle room.
but to each his own.

Bring a flashlight to look for dust/mold inside the lens, or other stuff on the glass. Its got the nickname "the dust pump" for a reason. :) Though this is a minority of cases.

Does this raise a red flag for anyone? A lot of scams start out this way...

1200 is way too high. I've bought a few 100-400's for under 800. If you live near a major city you're likely to find one soon enough for a price like that

....

Could be someone dealing in stolen goods .. in which case he'll snatch your hand off when you low ball him like that.

There's nothing odd about that listing. I think the prices are a little high though. I gave 750 for a 100-400 before, but it was over ten years old. $1000-$1100 is probably about right for a good condition newer date code, on Craigslist.

Ever changing.
