I bring a DSLR along when I'm kayaking--along with a waterproof bag

I tend to bring the cheapest equipment I've got, but money is money. My only close call was with a sleeping manatee that I managed to glide over. It darn near sucked me in with $3000 worth of camera + lens.

Nothing quite like seeing a giant whirlpool form right in front of you.

here's my waterproof bag

wow, she pretty brave to swim w/em. id be friggin scared :

nahhh they are pretty calm and they only eat plankton and small shrimps, so they are pretty harmless to people, the only thing I am scared about is if they ram the boats

Their name is far more dangerous than they really are
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whale_shark (external link)

The whale shark, Rhincodon typus, is a slow-moving filter feeding shark and the largest extant fish species.

The whale shark is found in tropical and warm oceans and lives in the open sea with a lifespan of about 70 years.[3] Although whale sharks have very large mouths, as filter feeders they feed mainly, though not exclusively, on plankton, which are microscopic plants and animals. However, the BBC program Planet Earth filmed a whale shark feeding on a school of small fish. The same documentary showed footage of a whale shark timing its arrival to coincide with the mass spawning of fish shoals and feeding on the resultant clouds of eggs and sperm.[1]

ohh mine is not a backpack...more like just a SACK. Backpack should be awesome although I don't use it enough to justify forking out $200-$250 on a bag like that

It's heavy, but it doubles as a gear vault--it's massive inside. The pod itself is hard to open and close, but the inner pack (which isn't waterproof) can be zipped quickly. If I'm really lazy I can just clip the top closed and it holds it all in place. Even if the bag isn't zipped in the pod, I really only worry if it's submerged. Splashed water isn't going to soak through.

mine costs like $40  airtight enough...I only ever use it when I go on small boatrides, otherwise I use a regular bag.
