I was visiting the Botannical Gardens in Denver with my 30D and a 85mm prime. A guy walked up with his P&S and asked me to take a photo of him by this sculpture because I must be a "professional". So I composed a nice shot and took it. He comes back, looks at the viewfinder and says "I am not even centered but thanks anyway."

Been reading through this thread and came across this that struck a chord.

Anyone else hesitant when people ask you to take their picture? It feels strange to me because I haven't visualized what i want the shot to look like.

Head only, head and torso, full body?
Background?
Aperture?
Light?
Composition?

And I never like the result.

I don't do it when I have my camera with me. When I don't have my camera with me, and someone walks up, hands me their camera and asks if I can take a shot of them, then sure.

My reasons for the distinction:
1. Normally when I have my camera, I am focused on what I am doing (pun intended) and don't want to be bothered.
2. They will have expectations that I don't want to have to live up to.
3. I've had people ask me to take a picture of them with my camera and e-mail it to them -- I just don't want to get involved.
4. I don't want to be handling another camera while mine is hanging around my neck.

I am asked frequently and am happy to oblige. I make a quick composition that includes everyone, avoids glare and shadow and snap the shot with their P&S. It's a keepsake for them and I don't worry that it's not something portfolio worthy. No one's been unhappy yet.

Only once have I been handed a DSLR. I just verified the AF was on the shutter half-press. Didn't even look at any other settings. Again, they just wanted a keepsake and they were happy.

Agreed.

Of course, there was the one time when two strangers asked me to take a shot with their $100 P&S and I outdid myself with the composition. Two months later I discovered that they had entered it in a photo contest and won $10,000 and a two-year contract with National Geographic.

NOT NOT NOT!

All I want is a 10-2000 f/0.5L with no distortion that weighs 100 grams, fits in my pocket, and costs $300. Is that too much to ask?

Of course also, you pressed the shutter button, so you hold the copyright on the image.

I fear we'll be hearing this story as an urban legend in 3 - 5 years!!!! Everybody here will have it bookmarked so that the link can be easily posted for the noobies who ask for details in hopes to recreate the event for themselves.

It's my life and I'll get pissed if I want to.

I hope so. Urban legend is my only hope for fame.

Heh! That's funny -- you have given us all something to aspire towards, since the job openings for "famous photographer" have all been filled:)!

Bump!

I still haven't had anyone really comment on my 70-200 when I'm using it, which I guess could be a good thing.

I photographed the Sekh Parade in NYC on Saturday and went to Grand Central Station to take a few shot with the 1DsIII and 24-105L IS and a negro woman said "IF your penis is as big as that lens, I want to see it."
I smiled and extended it fully.
Only in NY.
