Sharpening adds noise. I find LR a bit too aggressive and never use the sharpening option there. I definitely need to do some more controlled tests, but given the provided parameters, and assuming AF actually hit it's target, does the sample look soft to you? ---------------

It looks a bit soft but I can not tell you for sure if it is the AF or something else. Do you get the same results with other lenses? One of those tests: Shot behind window (original perspective) 200mm, 1/80 sec handheld ![]() Heavy crop of the same shot ![]() I'd say that on average, my crops would be close to your results. Here is another example, this time simply converted using DPP, with only in-camera sharpening of the default=3. 100% crop ---------------

Maybe you worry too much or compare the lens with the 100 L macro you own, which has to be sharper than this lens, when compared at 100mm. From my experience, the 70-200 2.8 ISII is very sharp at F 4.5 down to F9. Canon EOS 600D gripped, Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS Mark II - Youtube

When the 70-200 hits, it is sharp, but on occasion I'm having some trouble getting it to actually hit its target. I might just need more experience with the lens...Lightroom metadata shows I've only taken 160 pics with this lens. ---------------

It's weird, I'll be sure I got the shot and then back at the computer it'll be soft. Then the next shot, taken a second after, exactly the same way, will be spot on perfect. Can't say I mind that much as it is probably me doing something I shouldn't and when it hits it really hits!
