Cool. Former film shooter here so I'll fill you in on the news. Digital sensors are not prone to the same UV issues that film was. No UV or haze filter is needed. It will only add an extra piece of glass between the sensor and the subject increasing the chances of lens flare. I used to pack a UV on all my lenses but I made that switch about 3 months into digital. For "protection" I just always shoot with a lens hood which makes it much more difficult for something to hit the front element, eliminates the possibility of the lens being scratched with a broken filter if something were to hit the lens, and lets me take full advantage of the advanced optics and coatings to maximize sharpness without having to worry as much about flare.

I do pack a couple ND filters for flash in full sun with wide apertures and for slowing shutter speeds down if I want blur without having to go to the small apertures. I also pack a CPL which does cause some problems occasionally on a lens like this because of the wide field of view but otherwise, any other filter can be applied in post which for me is much better because you can change the density, graduate where you want, and all that without worrying about flare. :-)

At least that's my take on it after making the leap about 2 years ago.

Great info. Thanks for the response. I actually ordered with the UV just for the protection reasons and did notice some flare when I didnt think there should have been any. I think it will be returned for CPL.

The only filter that I use with this lens is a CPL filter.

Oh, and welcome to POTN!

Thanks!

Thanks!

The lens hoods on alot of lenses are usually shallow enought that most people can reach a finger in and adjust a CPL filter with it on. So far, out of my lenses, the Sigma 150-500 is the only one that is difficult to reach the filter with the hood still on.

Here is my early findings and opinion of the Marumi Super Circular CPL 77mm version.

Price was $76.00 USD

As you can see it is very thin; on the advise of others prior to screwing on my lens I ran my pencil lead around the threads giving it a bit of graphite.

Took it out to one of our jobsites; seems to knock out the glare very well along with reducing about 1.5-2 stops of exposure.

Removing the filter can bechallenging due to how thin it is; glad I used graphite on the threads as I am sure it would have been stuck without it. Other have recommended getting a filter wrench, but so far I have not needed one with any of the lenses that I have tested it on.

I've been really happy with Marumi. I have their ND filters too.

Man this lens does some weird stuff when you get up close and personal...

I've only used this on landscapes but close ups get a whole new perspective with this lens.

I have this lens (Sigma 10-20mm) and absolutely no complaints from me. I love the overall sharpness and for the price, it's a great piece of kit. I only use it on landscapes myself.

Loving these shots. The exposure on the 2nd one is perfect to capture the scene and the fireworks. Very impressive. :)
