You're fortunate to live in the digital age where your learning curve is rather fast. You can shoot and see almost immediately what you did, then adjust and shoot again. The process that used to take weeks of shooting, taking notes, developing, waiting on prints, then getting back out doing again really slowed us down. BUT it also forced us to really think about the shot before we would shoot. Film and developing were expensive. So if I have any advice, that would be it. Picture in your mind what you WANT the pic to look like, think it through each setting on the camera, then shoot it. Then if it doesn't give you what you want, try to figure out WHY. You'll find in time that you MAKE great photos, you rarely TAKE them. Sure, occasionally a great shot will reveal itself but not usually.

Awsome advice KF thanks.

I am doing alot of that now thinking about things like what F value to use based on what i want for depth of field, to what ISO i want to match with shutter speed vs apiture to trying to frame the shot the way i want it to look.

Going on vacation soon to Disney and i cant wait to see what i can frame and make for pics down there. Should be loads of fun with the new 17-70 and my other 2 lenses (canon 35mm f2 for low light and 55-250 for reach).

I have to say on a totally unrelated side note, as a biologist by trade, all this learning of photography has really given me a new appreciation for the human eye.

Wonderful isn't it? The AF system is just incredible and the dynamic range is awesome. But even more intriguing is how the brain puts it all together to make a seamless image out of two eyes around a blind spot and a sharpness sweet spot of only about 2 degrees! Glad you got to work in your field. my degree is in physical anthropology yet I ended up in sales building MPLS networks for large companies. Funny how that works out sometimes.
