Thank you both.

It's all better on full frame. The only lens I really like on crop is the 24L.

Thanks Joe, Ahmed.

Used flash for the foreground exposure and a fast shutter speed to darken the background. The day was pretty dark and overcast hence the flash.

Thanks Ahmed - here is another with the "Clarity" backed off. (Adobe has been apprised of the strange Clarity behavior in the latest Lr4 release before I noticed it)

Another moon and a few more recent

a few from yesterday & today

Hmm... well I took almost 40 shots of a few bees on dandelions yesterday and these two 'sort of' turned out...
Obviously the 70-300L is not intended as a macro lens but I'm curious what setting any of you have used for 'really small' subjects?

Its possible that I had better luck at f/6.3 vs f/8 for example. I wondered if on occasion I was too close (closer than the allowable 1m) - but all my shots did have at least a portion of something in focus... unfortunately it was never enough of the bee! ;) :p The sun on their shiny wings and body also likely was an issue for focus.

Anyways, I am not expecting miracles in macro... eventually getting some Kenko tubes is on the list. At least I could keep them in my pocket when opportunity comes along to use them.

The 2nd shot is sooooooooo endearing. Well caught.

Bugs and bees with the 70-300L - I call them psuedo-macro.

Firstly tubes - the 12mm works best and has the most flexibility. The other 2 are very difficult to use with AF so go manual focus if using those.

Shooting - my usual startup settings are f16, 1/125, diffused flash bounced off something and usually never directly on the subject.
