You may not need a new camera first. You might want to look into lighting and lenses. Your 85 is the only low light lens, and I'm guessing it's a bit long for what you are wanting to shoot, which would leave you with the kit lens. Since that is an older non-stabilized lens, just upgrading to the IS version may be enough, but you might need to go with a 2.8 lens like the Tamron 17-50, or Sigma 17-50 OS.

Also some on, or better yet, off camera lighting would do wonders for the kit you already have. Are you shooting seat that are already installed in trucks, or just sitting by them selves? That will really dictate what options you have with lighting. A single on camera bounced flash might be all you need if they are not installed.

Just curious - could you take the seats outside for photographs? You'd have plenty of natural light, and could use a simple reflector to add more as needed. You could even photograph the seats near a truck if your shop has a flashy show vehicle.

The XTi is more than capable of taking great photos with plenty of available light.

Second this ^^.

Sometimes you don't need to spend as much as you'd think (sometimes nothing) to make a photograph better.

If the seats arent moving I would suggest a tripod, small aperture and good lighting.

60D, Canon 18-135 IS, Sigma 10-20 hsm, 24-70 2.8 hsm, 70-200 2.8 hsm, 430EX II, and all the other stuff that goes along with it.

you should be able to do that with what you've got, assuming you have a tripod/flash to use. if not, and the company you work for is buying you a new camera to photograph truck seats, then only the 5D MKIII will work for that task.

^^^ And don't forget the new wireless flash controller and two of the new 600's - so you can properly light it.

I took some good low light shots with my Xti, using the kit lens and a tri pod. Now that I have a 550EX flash, I can take even better low light shots with it. For your use, it should be fine. I'm personally upgrading to the 60D though, because I need to take fast shots in low light, and the XTi just isn't doing it for me anymore.

As other people have said, the lighting is the most important thing here, followed by the lens, with the camera coming in a distant third. I'm guessing the "poor lighting" may be fluorescent, which will make things even worse because of the cycling effect (see here https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1021153 for more), which can really goof up your pictures. You can overcome the poor lighting for less $ than buying a new camera.
I'd suggest starting by reading about product photography lighting, then go on from there. Here are some good places to start:

If color accuracy is important, then you also need to address that by shooting a "reference" for white balance, such as a neutral gray card, and using that to set a custom white balance. Here's more on using a neutral gray card to set white balance:

Some Canon stuff and a little bit of Yongnuo.
