Last week my G12 decided to be broken :-) after 15 months of loyal service. I turned it on and the lens only extended a little bit and the lens protector opened halfway. That was it.
Nothing moved anymore no matter what I tried. On top of that I noticed a big scratch on my lens.
Although 5 months out of warranty Canon decided to fix the issue under warranty!!
I thought that was pretty sweet.
Got my camera back today (after exactly 7 days) and not only was the camera working again, the scratch on my lens was gone!!

Now that's what I call service...
Very happy with Canon right now :-).

Not sure where you sent your camera, but I'll attest to the quality of their Irvine service center. They fixed my G12 on the spot last month; took all of about six minutes...

My camera was repaired in Newport News, VA which is a mail in only location.
Took exactly 7 days from dropping off at the post office to be being back at my door again. So not only was the service good (free!!) but they were fast too :-)

I also sent my G12 to Newport News, VA repairs were free and it was out of warranty... scratched lens, it was back to my home in Arkansas in exactly 7 days after sending it off. Can't beat service like that. It only cost me the shipping to the repair facility.

Two of you spoke of "scratched lenses." Can you tell us HOW they got scratched? Or does it remain a mystery? I'd like to know 'cause I just bought a G12.

I have a G11 and G9, but have not had the scratched lens issues some have experienced. The G9 lens cover blades are smaller and less flexible than those of the G10/G11/G12. One theory is that the larger and thus more flexible lens cover blades of these models are easier to press in to the lens glass when handling the camera - putting it in to a bag or taking it out. I agree with this theory, since I've caught myself starting to do just that. The jury is still out on the actual cause, but since my G11 lens is not scratched, I'm voting for the accidental gripping theory.

I'm also guessing that my scratch came from accidental gripping. I caught myself several times picking up the G12 with one or more fingers on the lens cover blades.
I'm much more careful now.

The G12 has a problem with the auto lens cover mechanism, it is way too close to the glass, any pressure applied while it is closed it can rub against the glass and scratch it. I learned this as I was doing research after a scratch appeared on my G12 lens. Canon service replaced it even out of warranty. So I have put a 58mm filter adapter on just for the piece of mind.

Never heard of the lens scratching problem.

Definitely something to keep an eye out for...

Glad to hear of positive reports of Canon Service.

I can only hope this is a positive sign that there has been a management change, or some other shift in approach to customer attention. Consumer products customer service is a challenging area, but my past experience with canon (chicago?) was non-plus... an exchange of 'forms' and a 'flat-rate quote'.

God, it would be great if they've turned around.

I keep an adapter tube and a UV filter on my G12 always. Have since I bought it in 2010. The only time it comes off is when I switch to the adapter tube with the CPL. No dust or scratch issues. My only regret is Canon did not have their 58mm adapter tube out until long after the 72mm Lensmate :(
