The top LCD had some small scratches, the tripod mount area was scuffed and the battery compartment/grip was loose. I called Canon and they transferred me to the Technical Support department to document my issues. When I mentioned the shutter count, the technician almost laughed and told me that it wasn't a big deal and that the 5D shutters are rated up to 150,000 actuations. It took me several days with lots of refreshing on the Canon page, but finally 5D stock came in (and stayed in stock during the phone call) and I could exchange the camera. I just got the exchange and it looks great. Looks like new and only 20 actuations. I did an informal survey of shutter counts from 40 refurbs as reported in a Slickdeals thread and figured out the average was ~800 actuations with a high of 3200 (not counting mine). I would've been fine with the camera if it was in better shape and less than 5000 actuations.

Very good deal, but there was one hiccup. After a week of shooting I started to notice some problems with the images: CA in the center of field even when stopped down, and some softness across the whole frame for many pictures. It just did not look right for an L quality lens. I took my rig to a local camera shop and took some identical pictures with my 24-70 and theirs, and could tell a difference when I examined the results at home. Worried about the short warranty on my refurb lens, I sent it in right away, and sure enough Canon confirmed the problem and replaced the 2nd group and a few other parts. Overall the warranty process went very smoothly and only cost me shipping one way, took about two weeks total, so it was not too painful. I am not sure the lens problem had anything to do with it being a refurb, but I thought the folks here might want to know my experience. Assuming the lens is really better (I have yet to test it), I am still happy with my CLP purchase. If you buy an accessory they upgrade you to free 2 day shipping. WOW really, ANY accessory? Very tempting. Josh

I'm still completely shocked that I was actually able to grab the 50D! ![]() If you sell the 28-135 that comes with it, you can have a ridiculously good camera at a very, very low price. ^_^ Me too, Ryan. I was told that it's body + lens, or body + speedlite, or all three, for the free 2nd day shipping. I.E. if you buy a body and a lens hood or something, that doesn't count, but that's just what the rep I ordered from said.
