Borrowed a friends longer range lens to try this tonight.

I was going for the glow effect as it was rising

Then just a regular shot, the moon was red for some reason.

Ok, so I'm looking at these, and they are awesome and awe inspriring! I'd like to understand why mine don't look as crisp as some of the others (Blkjpg's for example). Is the difference in the hardware, the PP, or is my eyesight just worse then I want to admit to? Any guidance is appreciated.

Honestly, this was my first time shooting the moon (technically the second; I used yesterday's moon to do some trial and error shots to find the best techniques, settings, etc.). That being said, I can't say that my way is the best, or even the right way, but I'd be happy to let you know my technique.

1) use manual focus
2) use live view to digitally zoom into the moon to fine-tune your focus (this was only the first or second time I've used my live view, so this took some getting used to)--it's helpful to activate IS while you're doing your fine-tuning
3) use mirror lockup
4) use a timer or remote shutter release

I also blended three exposures for the photo that I posted.

As for equipment, I shot this photo with a 40D and a 70-200 f4 IS with a 2x teleconverter. Settings: 1/250 sec (for the properly exposed shot), f6.3, ISO 200.

I hope this helps.

My first attempt at tonight's moon. 500mm with no tripod.

Hi all,

I posted this in the "Official shoot the Moon" thread, but thought I'd post here as well. Today's super moon setting over Brisbane

Cheers,
Stephen

First time shooting the moon, besides the misquotes getting an early breakfast, it was quite nice.

Mactosh, what setting did you use?

300mm focal,
f/5.6
ISO 100 or 200, cant quite remember
1/100 shutter, maby a bit higher,

I tried with several setting and i think these worked best
Shot RAW then adjusted the brightness, shadows and highlights and such in Photoshop

This is a super shot ! There are some that have been PhotoShopped in and that defeats the purpose of making a good image . I'll keep my mouth shut tho . I can always spot a fake , but this one looks great ! Good job !

Very good job PhotoShopping but this is not real , sorry but no way would the moon be this color this low on the horizon . Picture kinda looks like a HDR image with a perfect bright moon photoshopped in . Great job tho on the edit ! ;) BTW you should have adjusted your opacity cause the clouds on the right back side of the moon should be in front of the moon , not behind it . Moon is in Space , anything in our atmosphere would be in front of the moon ;) .
