I think Dialup is faster. Isn't it?

I know... I've been trying to get DSL installed in this area for the last 5 years. They finally have it at the end of the main intersection near my street. Now they just need to install the switches needed at the box at the end of my driveway. They say that probably wont happen until the end of fall or beginning of next year if the budget allows it.

Just get a cheap prepaid cell phone and use that as a modem.

How would that work? I'd have to get a 4G phone or something like that right?

Get a data plan for your phone and use it. Or you can get one of those separate wireless hubs. I have one and it is almost as fast as my home connection. Something like this:http://www.t-mobile.com …e-Sonic-4G-Mobile-Hotspot (external link) My dad lives in a rural area and he tried Hughes net as well. needless to say the dish is now a garden hose rack. He uses a Verizon hotspot.

The thing with Verizons MiFi is that for $69 per month you get 5 GB of download limit. I get 10GB for the same amount with Hughesnet.

T-mobile looks like it's $79 for 10 GB. I would have to test that out.

I'm on T-Mobile and have an pseudo unlimited plan. Basically, after I reach the limit it reverts to 3G speeds, but there are no overage penalties. Personally, I used to tether my phone to my laptop and use it as a modem when on the road, and even the 3G was plenty fast so long as you had signal.

Well, my problem is my computer isn't the only one in the house. If I only had one computer then tethering to a phone would be a great idea.

I wasn't saying you had to tether it, I was just making the point that back before 4G, I used my 3G android phone as a modem and it was plenty fast at 3g speeds. ;)

Basic non smart phones have modems that use Edge rather then 2/3/4G and you can tether via cable. But it wont be anything like using the 3/4G hotspot function on a smart phone. I know you used to be able to get a cheap prepaid tmobile phone and tether with it. But it appears they have done away with that since people probably abused the unlimited nature of those plans. About the only option you have is getting a wireless internet plan or using a hotspot although both options are costly.

Another option might be a long range Wifi antenna depending how far you live from an open hotspot which many hotels now offer.

If all else fails look into the possibility of google TiSP.

Satellite would be a better option...

I'm in Oklahoma....I do live in the city though.....we pay the price to live where we live. I don't complain about the 100 bucks a sq foot home prices though!!!

Unfortunately my wife and I need it for our jobs. Otherwise I'd settle going to the library.
