What is this snake? (ID request)

I found this snake in my garden today. It was skinny and small, maybe 1 to 1.5 feet long. I tried two different online "snake ID" websites but couldn't narrow it down to one that looked like this.

Any ideas what kind of snake this is?

Thanks! My gf was afraid I was going to get bit, I was only about 2 inches away from it with my 70-300 + raynox 250 (still new, getting used to the super shallow DOF).
