Is the canon worth the extra $100 ? I was looking at the vello, it looks identical to the canon. Does it perform just like the canon ? I have been thinking about getting an l bracket but I am just going to make one, for $150 I can spend some time behind the mill and make built in tripod shoes on both sides. Will the rss bracket fit on the non oem grips ?

Thanks !

What things are better on the canon one ? I'll probably end up finding a used one.

I personally like the look and feel of the Canon grip. My friend has a different brand on his 7D and wishes he would have paid the extra $$ for the Canon one.
I also have a RRS L-Plate fitted and the whole thing seems extremely solid in my hands.

Canon grip for sure, I went with a 3rd party grip for my Rebel that got great reviews from almost everyone. It didn't wear well and the quality, while decent was not the same as OEM Canon. It was also directly related to a costly repair.

I bought the Canon grip for my 7D and couldn't be happier. This is an expensive camera, don't skimp on the accessories just to save a few bucks. I heard it directly from the tech at the Jamesburg repair center, they've fixed many a screwed up battery box due to 3rd party grips.

Off brand grips are generally crap, I would avoid them like the plague especially since the 7D one is only $160. I've owned a few off brand grips and they are just extremely flimsy. The only reason I would get a third party one is if the Canon one was over $250, it's worth at least that much though.

I have a Meike grip (it came with it used on CL) and sometimes it doesn't show that the info for both batteries. I have to unlatch the left battery so it registers. I suggest brand name Canon.

I can't comment on the quality of the aftermarket models, but I've used the Canon grips on my 7D and 10D for years and never had a problem with either. I thought about the 3rd party parts to save money, but I went for the Canon stuff for peace of mind (kind of like buying good CF cards).

Check out the underlying construction of the two. I believe the Canon is not just plastic like so many of the 3rd party ones?

The BG-E7 is specifically for the Canon 7D and is made of the same magnesium alloy construction that the camera is made of.

from this review http://www.tyleringram.com …ery-grip-for-canon-eos-7d (external link). I had the Canon one and loved it.

Sums it up for me as I have both 7D's gripped with Canon Grips. The feel, texture and most importantly electronics are consistent.
The cost of the grip is about 10% of the cost of the body. Is saving tip money worth the risk?

Always go with the real canon stuff, I had some bad experience with third party products.
