First DSLR Lens broken - Worth it to fix it?

Hello all, about a year ago i did the unthinkable, i left my Canon 28-135mm on the hood of my car and it ofcourse rolled off and onto the ground. One of the lens elements is loose and i believe another is heavily scratched from the fall so i am wondering if it's worth fixing or not. I have been using my backup camera on a tripod and controlled with a remote so i would LOVE to have this lens available and on that camera instead of just having my tokina 12-24 for it. I see that they are around $400 new so can i get this fixed for $200 or less? I have never sent anything to canon to be fixed or clean so i don't know the cost of these kind of things or who to call.

And if it is too much to fix, any suggestions on anything fun i can do with it? Maybe make a cup or something?!?!?!?

The 28-135mm lens can be had for relatively cheap used in the marketplace, even less than $200 if you choose to replace it.

You can try to sell it as-is on eBay for parts. If not, post pictures when you make a cup out of it!

I agree with Elvin, if you like the lens purchase a used copy. A quick search through my local Craigslist and I found several under $200!

For sentimental value, I would make it into a cup and be reminded of your first broken lens everytime you drink out of it.

well i took it apart and tried to rebuild it.. for some reason the auto focus doesn't work, what the heck is going on!?!?!

If you are not joking, then I'd have to ask how careful were you to properly reconnect the ribbon cable?

Hmmm, I think the lens is not water resistant, and is now quite prone to dust behind the front element, in its current condition. And you have a few too many left over screws after the reassembly, judging from the photo. You might want to dissassemble and try again.

Looks cool! I think you should glue or cement everything in place on a board/pedestal..exactly as it is, and place it in a glass case. It looks like some works of art that i've seen. Who knows... you might get some big bucks for it as abstract art. At the very least, it would be a great conversation piece at parties!

Sorry about your misfortune, BTW...but it could have been one of your costlier lenses that you left on the hood, so things could be worse.

It's probably not worth the time and effort to try and refix it. Sell it for parts and move-on with getting a new one

disassemble the lens is a good idea, you don't always have the chance and a cheap lens to do it

Everything appears to be tilted to the left. A little nudge to the right and everything should work fine.

haha thanks for all of the replies, btw there is no way this works I COULD have been able to put it all back together (possibly) but i did break one of the cables, but i had no plans on doing that so i didn't care.

probably not unless it's under or around $100, i do eventually want to replace the lens with a back up kit zoom lens like that but i don't want to spend that much money, would rather put it towards L glass
