What is the deal with this?

A few months ago this lens was 1100-1200 bucks. Now it it showing closer to $1500 dollars. Is it due to the 24-70 II coming out soon? I'm seeing people sell their 24-70 in the FS/FT forums for more than what I could have gotten the thing new for 2 months ago.

Either supply is dwindling or Canon moved the price up-market relative to the new Tamron. If it costs more, it has to be better, right?

More like leaping up in price! Currently only B&H and Adorama (from the popular retailers list) have it in stock for $1600.

canon no longer providing the supply most likely. At the current price point, might as well wait for the version 2..... I think that's canon's strategy anyhow.

The v2 of the lens is going to be much pricier apparently, so it appears that supply for the current lens has dried up, and when the II is released it's going to cost much more, so the market is simply dictating price based on current supply and demand.

Here in the UK the Mk1 is retailing for around $1,300, the MK2 on the other hand is going for anything above $3,700!

Got mine for $1199 in December 2011. Shocked to see the lens cost $400 more.
