Hi folks,

Don't know if any of you have come across with this...
I bought a old 5D that originally works fine. After couple of days, all of sudden, there is the infamous err 99 message shown. Then I found that all the pictures I took have about up third black. Like the picture below.

By using B mode, I found that something is blocking the sensor! see the picture below. Is it the shutter curtains? why it stuck there? and how can I get it fixed?

Many thanks!
boris

Shutter curtain. Shutter failure. Off to Canon (or a local and capable shop) with this one.

Shutter fix cost me $180 on the 20D three years ago @ Canon Irvine. Don't know if prices are the same now, or if it would be vastly different on the 5D (I would hope not).

Couldn't this just be the focusing screen come lose? It almost looks that way from the photo!

What lens were you using when this happened? Any chance it was an EFS lens?

nope - you're looking at the shutter curtains (and they should be either all the way up, or all the way down...)

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

I had the same thing happen on a 10D. Apparently this was a common problem and had to do with the pivot point for the mirror. Found a tutorial on how to fix it and did it myself. Not saying that the 5D is having the same problem though, but it looks like the mirror is not raising up all the way.

[edit]
In the picture shown above, he has the camera on bulb mode and has the shutter button pushed down. If it was the shutter curtain, wouldn't the mirror be all the way up exposing the defective shutter curtain?

yep - in the posted picture, the mirror is up out of the way and the greenish thingy is the top half of the sensor. The bottom half is covered by the stuck shutter curtain.

ummm..the mirror IS up.... :o
(EDIT, Joe beat me to it :) )

It is definitely the shutter like Joe mentioned..
Typical prices are ~$200-250 or so for a shutter repair//replacement from Canon..ymmv..

Good luck!

OOPS! My bad. Thought the sensor in behind the shutter curtain was the mirror.
