So my family is safe and that's all that matters, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had this happen and how the homeowners insurance treated them. I know I should have a personal property policy and funny enough I was in the middle of setting one up before my wife and I leave on a trip for our ten year anniversary in a week, but it's not final and we were robbed today, so it'll be up to my homeowners. I have receipts for almost everything. Will they usually reimburse depreciated value or replacement value?

Gear included

It is all according to your policy, most policies use depreciation. I pay extra for actual replacement cost.
Sorry to hear it happened.......good luck with your problem.

Sorry to hear about it. Call your insurance to have a better idea what is and isn't covered. I would assume at a min they will reimburse depreciated value based on usage. Good luck with the claim.

So sorry to hear. That literally makes me sick to my stomach to think about it. Every time I hear about a home robbery, it makes me think about the notorious Cheshire, CT home invasion where those 2 scumbags killed and raped the guy's wife and daughters...so as you already pointed out, your family is safe and that is what counts.

On a positive note, maybe you can use some of the insurance money to put towards the 5D3!

Sorry to hear about that. What awful timing. I hope you can afford to replace the gear before your trip. If you don't have replacement cost make sure you know what the items sell for on the used market as what you are offered may be significantly less than what it will cost you to replace them even buying second hand. Insurance companies will typically give you a lowball offer which you can refuse but be prepared for a fight.

Talk to your insurance broker before talking to the insurance company.

Sorry for what happened to you, bad timing.

If it makes anything feel better, an least your family is fine and you have insurance.

Where do you live jnadz? You may want to check out your local craigslist/ ebay etc, you may be able to locate those thieves if you are lucky, then get the police to meet up with them :)

I live in Orlando, and yes the police told me to check Craigslist and eBay frequently to see if anything seems suspicious...

Also, I know the insurance company will have some answers for me but they are closed until the morning and I just couldnt wait and figured I'd ask to see if anyone had any ideas or advice immediately

Last, I will be replacing the gear and I will most likey use the check and kick in some money to get a 5d3, but since things won't be settled before this trip to costa rica (and getting a 5d3 is slow these days), any suggestions on a camera to purchase and bring in the meantime. Ie something I'll still be glad to have (because its convenient) even after I buy a new slr kit. Maybe a decent compact super zoom or the s100 or a water resistant camera.

Maybe at this point, rent a camera and lens. This way you are not pressured into purchasing something you do not really want.

just a few of my thoughts...

I've been considering getting a new compact camera anyway, so this seems like a no brainer time to pull the trigger on that...

That sucks that all your gear was stolen but like what you and others have said, you and your family are safe.
About your camera purchase, I have a S95 and love the thing. Never gets in the way but still is a very capable little camera.
I don't think you'll go wrong with the S100.
