5D MK III & 600 EX

Hi,

I should probably already know this (as I own a 5D MK III), but can I use the 600 EX-RT off camera with just the 5D MK III to control it (is this capability built into the 5d MK III?) or do I need to purchase the ST-E3 to control the 600 EX-RT?

You need the ST-E3, or the 600 EX-Rt or a long eTTL cable

Camera has no radio ro flash to signal the flash units. That would have made way too much sense for the product manager to include.

Or go the pocketwizard / etc. route.

Great shoots! Yeah I'm debating if I should get another 600ex-rt or the St-e3

i would stay away from PW.

it's not a bad idea to go w/ the extra 600ex, incase you need one for a backup reason.

I'm waiting for them to beta test their new firmware on the Flex/600EX combination. I bet they will blow up a few and say Canon made a faulty flash again...

Especially in a $3500 camera. Oh well, there has to be a reason to buy the mk4, no?

OP - If you go the pw route it's about, the same amount of $ buying 580s and pw flexes. Just be aware that you'll have to get the 580s treated otherwise you'll have range issues. The biggest benefit of the pw control TL system is the ability to use it with AB/Eli strobes AND the small flash units.

That'd be tough because then you have people complaining about paying for radio triggering when they don't need it. You also have to sell different cameras to different markets since there's that whole issue with licensing frequencies.

I'm sure most of us would have preferred in-body triggering, though.

If not PW then what would be another cost effective option then picking up a couple 600ex. I have a 580ex ii and want to expand my flash set up. I was highly considering the PW but willing to look into other options.

When it comes to wireless triggering system it's a touchy topic. My pocketwizard works great, and I don't have any problems with them at all. (knocking on wood).

i would go w/ radio popper px system. it doesn't modify/change to system to something goofy like pocket wizard, it only enhances canon's system and turns it into a radio signal.
