Bad news....I got the lens put back together, however the IS and AF (partially) don't work. The AF jitters around 3m, and IS makes the distinct noise, but doesn't function, and sounds like something is jamming it. I'm too tired right now to try fixing it, but I'll try again tomorrow. Now that I think about it, I should have just lived with the dots. By the way, they cleaned right off, I'm still not sure what it was though. :(

If it doesn't work, I guess the only option is sending it to Canon.

Great pic to fit this tragedy!

I'd try it again personally if you think that something is just capping out because of some kind of restriction. Maybe just reassembling more carefully will free up the problem.

I tried to find out what was causing the AF and USM to not work, however after reassembling the lens as carefully as I can, the AF still gets stuck at 3m. Something in the USM/focus-ring assembly isn't lined up right, however I can't seem to find it. The IS now doesn't make any noise and doesn't work. I checked all of the ribbon cables and they are all secured.

I'm just not going to bother trying anything else, time to sign up for CPS and hope that they don't charge too ridiculously for the fix.

I'm debating whether to post the guide or not, because I don't want other people screwing up their lenses.

Anyways, thanks everyone for the support and help.

[...] however after reassembling the lens as carefully as I can, the AF still gets stuck at 3m. Something in the USM/focus-ring assembly isn't lined up right, however I can't seem to find it.

Is there a mechanical assembly with a digital position/angle detector, that you mount with the detector at the wrong angle, so the mechanics is close to end-of-range, while the sensor indicates it is in middle or close to other side of the full range. So the software thinks it's at max focus distance when it's actually at 3m - the software allows it to focus closer (until it reaches what it thinks is closest distance, but in reality isn't).

Since the lens doesn't need to perform an AF operation to max or min distance when you connect and turn it on, it's likely that the lens have an absolute sensor - so directly when it's powered up, it can figure out exactly at what distance it is.

considering you went from a working lens, to a broken lens...maybe not the best idea...hopefully it doesn't set you back much...

Ouch! This is a good lesson for everyone. Just like pixel peeping, if you can't notice it under normal situations, there is nothing wrong. :D

Sorry for your loss. But just for my technical curiosity could you publish the guide and also the manual we can see on your screen on the photo. Thanks.
