I don't use this lens nearly often enough, if I had to pick 6 images I guess it would be these ...

I hated my 100-400...it was soft past 300mm and i was looking to write it off as a bad investment.

That was, until i got my 1D MkIII, and the combination just clicked, and not I love it.

These were taken with it last weekend.

So your hatred turned to love.
Strange how it was soft on one camera then sharp on another, how does the lens know about the camera? could it be the operator?

Well if you think about it, you'd probably go along the lines of each lens being made to a tolerance, and each camera being made to a tolerance, and sometimes, you get a pair that doesn't pair up so well, and sometimes you get a winning combination.

For example, a lens with +5 tolerance, and a body with +5, gives a +10 tolerance, which is unacceptable. However the same lens on a -5 tolerance body, gives perfect results.

This is why when you get lenses calibrated, they also prefer to have the body present to measure that.

The lens is soft on three cameras, and sharp on one, It's not operator issues.

Thanks! I wish we were in CST instead of PST so the sun would have been lower down near the horizon. Would have helped not having to use a 10-stop filter and getting some colors in the sky. Something in the foreground would have helped too, somewhat like this: www.flickr.com/photos/unripegreenbanana/7239242960/ (external link)

^ Beautiful prop blur, you are the master as I know how tough that is and still get a sharp shot. #1 needs to put the gears down, that is low!
