Thanks, 4.5 from that height gives plenty of sharpness from the players head to the ice, and allowed me to keep my shutter speed high enough and iso low enough...some guys goto 5.6, but I've found 4.5 to be perfectly fine... I do a lot of soccer remote work so I am trying to find the magic number for night games to get shutter speed yet have more leeway in terms of where I pre-focus. 4.5 at a night game might work, might be tough though...it works at the hockey game because I'm way up in the catwalk and there is really no guessing in the focus, it's focused in warmups and your going off players height so nothing changes during the game, whereas with soccer your judging a spot where you think it's going to happen, much different animal... I want to photograph events like that for a living so bad. Great job on the overhead shots. I assume your son will be getting a raise of allowance for making that great game time decision!

I've dabbled in NAHL Junior games, but never had the curage to set up remote from above, only to stand on the cat walks during game action. Needless to say, I had the camera strapped to me tighter than I would a parachute. "The quickest way to make money at photography is to sell your camera." - Anonymous
