I was really excited the other day getting a great price from Abes of Maine on the Sigma 17-50 2.8. I took advantage of the coupons and it arrived today. Super excited and i put it on the camera. Went to take a pic and it made strange noises hunting for focus. Just kept hunting and at times sounded like it was going to die. When it did focus it didnt focus correctly.

I changed to my Sigma 10-20mm and it focused flawlessly in the same light level. Tried the kit 18-55 and that focused great too. Tried the 17-50 again and again hunted and hunted, the auto focus sounded nothing like the HSM on the 10-20mm.

Has anyone else had this issue. In research i never came across this. Needless to say its going to be returned. Pretty bummed right now.

Sucks when you get excited about a new toy and then you have to send it back for a replacement. Don't give up, that was just a bad unit. Hope they send you a new one quick.

Yep call ASAP for an RMA. Just a note though, I called their sales department once and got Piss poor service. Hope their customer service is better. I have emailed the vice president and he seemed really nice, David Mosseri is his name. His brother is Abe.

the HSM on the 17-50 is a mirco-HSM, not a ring HSM

Does that mean this different/ slower then the HSM on the 10-20?

I dont think it will be a return issue, the lens just does not focus and hunts forever (4-5 sec or more). I can do much much better with the $100 kit lens

i have this lens before, and the focus sound is kind of noisy with the "click-click" sound

My copy of the lens is a bit noisy when it focuses but is sharp when it does!

Make sure the lens you received is indeed for your body. I had this problem once and ended up sending it to Sigma for a re-chip. They got it back to me in 1 week, working perfectly, no charge.

That is bad news maybe got damaged in transit? Send it back and get a new one,it is a great lens.
Mine focuses quick and quiet (quiet as all my other lenses) and snaps in focus under pretty poor light as well and is sharp on my 40D and 7D. Hope all goes well with the replacement.

My 17-50mm was a bit tight in its mount upon receipt and I had a similar issue caused by it not rotating fully and "clicking" in. Mounting and dismounting it a few times eliminated the issue.

this is definitly not the issue. I took it off and on several times and no change.

Its very possible this is a shipping issue. The lens was not secured very well in the shipping box and can move around alot. I am going to call for an RMA at 10am when they open and try and exchange the lens for a working copy.

Called this morning and its going back for exchange. Overall i got what i wanted but not as easy as it should have been.

The rep 1st suggested i call sigma and see if they had suggestions to get it to function properly, my reply was this is almost a $700 item and it should work when i click it in place. if it does not do that every time it needs to be exchanged.

Next after i got the # they wanted me to pay shipping and be reimbursed. I thought that was crazy and said you shipped it UPS so you have an account sent me the prepaid label. After being put on hold they decided to send me a label.

Hope the shipping back and exchange go smoothly and the new lens functions correctly.

When I first installed my 17-50, it did not lock on focus at all. Just kept hunting, eventually it worked and it has not done it since. I have been trying to replicate the problem in order to send it back if needed.
