Canon 17-55 doesn't even come with a hood, so it could be much worse

Thats the only sad thing about Nikon, Very few telephoto options above your standard 70-200 on a budget, Hopefully the rumors of the 70-300 f/4 VR are true

If Nikon makes such a lens it won't be cheap. The current 70-300 VR is good enough to shoot indoors at f/5.6, the VR is that good. Beyond that if you're on a budget the only real option is third party. At some point I'm going to pick up the Sigma 50-500 OS.

I coveted the 70-200 VRII. After really looking at the lenses for the photos I'd like to take, I realize I haven't the slightest clue what I would use this lens for. It's not long enough for the zoo and too long for my 24-85 normal range.

I was planning on getting one but I rarely shoot beyond 50mm in poor light and weight is an issue for me. The more I shoot the 28-300 VR the less I use other lenses including the 24-70. It is an extraordinary walkaround lens and is perfect for someone like me.

One of the big advantages of the 70-200 is the quick AF. It makes an excellent birding lens as long as you get yourself close....or just use a D800. ;)

I don't come to this forum often. Mostly just for this thread and the FS section. What's all the hubbub about?

Complaints about too many photos in this thread followed by someone opening a Nikon thread for photos. Then that thread was closed down by a mod and now this thread is getting flooded with photos again.....the end. ;)

Yeah I was pretty impressed by the little 55-300, and the 70-300 VR is supposedly even better, So i dont doubt it

The Sigma 50-500 was a fantastic lens, One of the very, very few lenses I can say I'd buy again given the oppertunity (Though likely would buy a 300mm f/4L IS and 1.4x over it right now)

You thinking of the Nikon 300 f/4 Kenji or the Canon f/4L IS? The Nikon one unfortunately doesn't have VR. However, coupled with a 1.4X it's still probably the highest IQ you can get at close to 400mm for Nikon without shelling out $7000 for the 200-400 or $9000 for the 400mm f/2.8 VRII (or one of the expensive 300 f/2.8's plus a t-con).
