New 24-105, Faulty IS????

So i upgraded from a 7D + 17-55 to a 5DIII + 24-105, and I really do think I have problems with my IS on the 24-105.

With the 7D I'd be getting sharp photos half the time at around 0.5s at 17mm and pretty much all the time at 1/5th then at 55mm I'd get sharp photos at about 1/10th of a second. Yet with the 5DIII at 24mm I struggle to get them at 1/40th, and to be honest, I can handhold that. And at 105mm, I've never got anything sharp slower than about 1/80th a second, which is not even a stops improvement from what i can get handheld.

Heres a quick sample at 24mm, IS off first, IS on after both at 1/40th of a second, SOOC other than the crop.

Yes, it makes a similar but quieter noise than my 70-200 f4 IS.

Then maybe its just the unique circumstances of that shot. You need to experiment with other scenes, other combinations of f/number and shutter speeds.

I've exactly the same "problem"... upgraded from 7D+15-85 to 5d3 + 24-105, and the IS is really horrible!!, is seems to work much worse than the one in 15-85....

I've seen that when you see the focus point jumping a little bit down once taken the photo, the IS didnt worked well.... it happens sometimes, other it seems to work fine.

It definitvely doesnt work as well as the one in 15-85 lens...

I'm not sure and really do think it may be the temperature as today, basically all of my IS shots were throwaways. When I was out shooting the temperature was about 2degrees C (about 35F), though this only affected the 24-105, my 70-200 was fine. However, now inside, just shooting inside in a heated room, it seems pretty good, and im getting down to 1/20th at 105mm which is about what I expect.

Did you leave time for the IS to spin up? I have heard that IS does need to to spin up and stabilize otherwise it might induce some blur of its own.

I don't see you mentioned how much you cropped. Can you post the same image without any cropping? Just resize it to fit the forum rule.

Yes, The shots were taken about 5s apart, IS OFF first flock it on, give it 2-3s to settle, took the next pic.

They should be 100% crops, heres the rough scene, with each sample taken from pretty much in the middle

Assuming there isn't something else causing this, I would go to the store and try a different one (or several) to check if it's just this lens.

The IS on that lens seems working backwards. I'll bring the camera+lens back to the store, and try another copy of the 24-105 on the camera, shoot on the spot and check whether or not the problem goes away.

Went back to the store, tried another copy. Better, but not great results. They agreed I should be getting better stabilization. So its on it's way back to Canon and I'm borrowing a second hand 24-70L till I get it back.

I've the same problem as you, simpleboy, i'll probable test the tamron 24-70 f2.8 stabilizer to see if it is better..

I'm thinking it is about the combination 5d3 + 24-105.... the camera produces VERY HIGH vibration when the mirror goes up, and the lens are not capable of compensate it....

In fact, if you use 2 second timer + mirror lockup settings, although you wont see what you are photographing during that 2 seconds, the stabilizer of the lens will work AS IT SHOULD and the image should be MUCH better than not using mirror lockup setting...

I have the 5dc and 24-105L I can regularly pull off 1/6th second no motion blur.......you should see it working at 105mm through the lens. Sounds like you did the right thing by sending it off to the big house.
