Looks genuinely interesting, What we have is a compact with a 1" sensor like the Nikon 1, Yet is smaller than the Fuji X100 (Which uses a 2/3" sensor) and the G1X (which uses a 1.5" sensor) its roughly the size of the S100 which means yes, this is an actual -compact- camera to boot.... which i think is what caught my eye more than anything

Looking through samples it looks like its shaping up nicely, the 20mp sensor, Zeiss optics and BionZ processing seem to be producing very good images, higher ISO looks a little soft from NR but id like to see processed RAW files before being too harsh on that

at $650 its a bit dear, but still less than the G1X and at least it really does make sense because of the size of the thing, This is smaller than any mirrorless from the looks of it...and its genuinely a "fit in the pocket" type of compact camera

Sony might have a knockout on their hands

I saw this as well.
Definitely competes with the Fuji X10.

Bah -- the price tag makes it seem off-putting... but that's because I keep wanting to consider it with smaller, cheap P&Ss...

Whereas this thing is a beast for numerous reasons as you've pointed out (justifying the price point), sensor, cost of like-competitors, etc.

Really want something that DELIVERS in a tiny form factor and this just might be it!

Ciao!

If it helps it will probubly drop to $500 by the holidays...

But that said, I would buy one, I like the samples ive seen, Good low light performance and in terms of DoF it actually offers the shallowest equivalent DoF compared to the competition (Yes, even the G1X isnt competing much)

This camera looks really, REALLY good! I've been wanting a great compact camera for some time now. Canon's SD series won't cut it and the Fuji XPro is too big to be a compact camera.

I know $650 is tough to swallow, but considering the host of features on this little camera, its good enough to "replace" my 5DII when I really want to go out without an SLR.

The resolution and wide lens is also a plus! I might just get this when it comes out.

I think thats the point.. Yes its pricey, But its also very small and has Mirrorless-level IQ, Anything with the same IQ is quite a bit bigger and heavier, and not really any cheaper either

Sony was smart here, This thing is a winner

I should have looked closer at the specs.... add this to another reason why to hate sony.

$650 pns camera without a charger.... no thanks sony, you can go to hell. I'll stick with the s100 if I want a supplement to my DSLR outfit.

Don't you feel a little foolish for saying "go to hell" over how the battery charges?

What are you saying to Canon with regard to the S100 and product recall? I guess if the battery charges externally nothing else matters...

For the record, I am anything but a Sony fan and really dislike charging the battery in the camera. I just don't understand hatred over this sort of trivial stuff.

Yeah im sorry but the battery thing...

The fact is you can make electronics smaller and lighter by integrating the battery into the unit itself as opposed to making it replaceable, See the smaller cell phones and laptops and etc with non-replaceable batteries, Theres a reason theyre not user replaceable, they're designed to utilize the space most efficiently and in doing so, this makes them very hard to make user replaceable...

it just doesnt seem like a massive issue to me, This is not your primary camera, This is your secondary walkabout camera and likely BECAUSE the battery is an integrated bespoke design then its likely it has higher capacity and better life than an interchangable one.... it will likely last you an entire day of shooting with no issue, Then you just plug the bloody thing in and let it recharge...

if this was on a DSLR or something where you could be using it for a LONG shoot and shooting thousands upon thousands of images, then yeah, non replaceable battery is a legitimate complaint, But this is not designed for that

I hate it because it creates another dependency issue that's idiotic. Yeah the battery will last a day the first year you have it, than half a day the 2nd year, maybe even less after. That sucks.

Also I do like having the ability to replace my batteries. You know they could fully iphone it and make it 16 gigs of memory onboard also. But for us it would be unreasonable, but why?

I have an iphone 4g (first model). It last less than 13 hours now of use. When I first got it it was 24 hours of use plus.

It's annoying knowing that our $400+ equipment still has the life expectency of our cheap chinese made dvd players but at 10x the price.

I think this is all just kind of funny. Worrying about the battery life in a camera that will have relevance for how long? I don't think it is any more absurd than people thinking they need $3,000 camera bodies and L lenses to get snap shots of their kids (this is not aimed at anyone in particular - far from it).

If being able to service your stuff is really all that important, don't buy things like iPhones. Personally I have never owned a phone much more than two years, and I would never trade the functionality I get with an I phone with something that had replaceable batteries.

People are so emotional about their gear...

The fact that Sony is now forcing this issue and other camera makers will have to follow - a small point and shoot with a large sensor, Fast Zeiss Optics, and is pocketable is all goodness. This will be trickle down technology and someday the $200 gear will have good sensors in them. So hate the camera, hate the company, but you have to love the direction it is sending point and shoot cameras.
