Great advice, thanks for the reply. my little girl loves having the camera pointed at her, she really comes alive when she knows attention is on her. I am really looking forward to getting out with her once a week for the next year.

What I do is either throw it over my shoulder or in the cart until I need it. I usually don't have it hanging from my neck cause I'd have Rylin fingerprints all over my lens.

I carry mine w me everywhere to. I really love my black rapidstrap, it hangs by my waist and when I need it BOOM its there

Kudos to you guys! I have a hard time with this. I feel so self conscious whipping out a DSLR in... non-touristy public places. I really need to get over that.

Thanks for sharing your 365 project. I have a 9 month old and this thread has been great inspiration. Maybe I'll do a "52" project from year 1-2. :)

I am with you there, it will be hard to get used to carrying the camera around, a gripped 7D or 50D and a 24-70L does not go un noticed...need to get that 40mm pancake! I am doing the 52 week deal for 1-2, she just turned 1 Friday.

Kind of off topic, but it’s really a great way to show off your gear to potential clients. I sometimes have someone say to me, “I have a canon…it’s just a 60d though.” You might get into some weird conversations about how amazing AV mode is though so learn how to cut the small talk with those people.

You might find doing a project like this will spark the interest of others. I just started wanting to take pictures of my daughter and now I’m booked through the summer and have 5 client’s waiting for edited pictures…and someone just booked me wanting pictures taken on the 18th and processed by the 21st. It can make life crazy, but it is fun for sure!

funny you mention that...the work I have done with my little girl in her first year, has landed me a few paying gigs doing family, birthday parties and kid portraits...

345 is just awesome, I really like the look on her face, the amount of scenery and the great bokeh...are you really down to the 5DMKii and the 85mm...

Thanks, something bugs me about it though. I think I need to work on her skin tones a little?

Yes sir! I feel handcuffed!! ONE focal length is hard! A friend is going to let me use his 24-105 until I can get something else. I feel lost with the different feel on the full frame sensor. Ive been shooting a crop for 2.5 years. XSi...7D... to the 5d2

I have been thinking about my next lineup. Im thinking: 17-40, 50L, keep the 85, & the 135L. That would fit my needs nicely!

I like the tones in 345, it would do nicely as a high key B&W.

I would feel really limited with one lens...I have paired down to 3 to buy one of them, but could not live with one by itself. That lineup you describe would be pretty nice, I might opt for the slightly faster yet slightly more $$ 16-35 MKI over the 17-40.

BTW, I finally got my Project 52 started and thread up....your 365 inspired me to keep it up and to finally share it...I had not posted anything of my little one until now.

I may have to try that high key BW!

Yeah, the 16-35 is awesome but def expensive! I love shooting wide so f/4 may not fit my style well, however I don't think I'll use the wide angle for portraits? Idk? I've never really shot wide.

That's great to hear! I will follow! Good luck!

The 16-35 MKi is a good bit less $$ than the MKii, and filters are less at 77mm compared to 82mm. Great lens, if I were to go full frame I would have to have one. You would be surprised how much you might use it at the 35 end.

I agree on the skin tones. On my monitor it looks like there is too much green and perhaps not enough red, but this monitor isn't calibrated so what do I know :)

I made the jump from an XSi to 5d2 half a year ago, and I bought a 24-70L and 85 f1.8 as well. I use it to photograph our two children (aged 1 and 5 respectively) and I absolutely love it.
I like photos taken with the 85mm the most (there is just something about that focal length that I love), but the 24-70 is an amazing lens that can be used in almost all situations and I don't think the 17-40 and 50L would do the same for me.
Not having to change lens can make a huge difference when you have two children running around you :)

my 24-70 is my go to these days...I admit, it is a great lens, but I have been surprised that I need to do a little more sharpening on images from it, compared to the 85, a lens costing a fraction of what the 24-70 does.
