i want a 7D instead of the 1D3

I would love to see some real side by side crop comparisons with the 1d3 vs 7d.

like set the lens up on a tripod and swap bodies side by side then crop til it looks like garbage.
I understand it may require a different exposure.

I have considered dropping my 60d for a 7d but I get pretty good pics and can crop alot if I get a good shot.

To be honest there isn't a dramatic difference and likely cannot be discerned in prints (unless printing very large then the 7D might be marginally better).

At lower ISOs, it is not necessarily a big issue.

Yupe. I'm much happier.
Two main reasons for my upgade to 1D series: low ISO noise handling, and the AF system.
Some added bonus such as 1D still able to AF when stacking 1.4x TC and lose 1 stop of light. 10FPS is SCHWEEEET for bird photography. Another thing i didn't pay attention until after handling both bodies is, how short the blackout time is on the 1D when shooting burst while panning at the same time. That helps maintain the subject properly in the frame. It's a welcome improvement for me.

Hard call between the two. I'd probably give the edge for the 1dmk3 as long as you can fill the frame substantially with the subject. 10MP is where I find the 1dmk3 to lack some versatility since you loose resolution if your cropping alot. In many cases many users do not have enough FL and must crop substantially.

I was sorry I sold my MK III to try a 7D, I got better quality images and the MK III is easier to use. The 7D seemed like extra work to get good results and the good did not compare to the MK III. I sold the 7D and got a MK IV but would take a MK III anyday.

There isn't an easy answer to the question. I shoot wildlife and the longest lens that I can afford at this time is the 100-400. Given the fact that I am often focal length limited, the 7d makes the most sense to me. It gives me more "reach" while also providing higher resolution for cropping. All of this equals getting more shots for me.

I have seen enough subjective evidence to be convinced that the 1D Mark III is probably the better camera in IQ as well as AF. For people that aren't often focal length limited, I believe that it is the better camera body (if you do not want video). That being said, the 7d has more wide angle options and can use EF-S lenses. This makes it a better stand alone camera in my opinion. It really just comes down to what you need.

I have a 10-22mm for my 7D. I LOVE the lens to death. After upgrading to 1DMkIIII I faced the same UWA issue. But i was able to solve that problem easily by using this effortless method.

I actually sold my 1D3 to buy a 7D a while back...the 1D3 is a better camera without question....the 7D is the more recent technology and as such has that going for it but for me there was no comparison ....I now have a 1D4 and 5D3....

thats really cool. I would definitely do the coat hanger and UV filter thing so I didnt accidentally knock the mirror though.

If I had a bigger lens (500 f4) I would seriously consider a 1d3.
however, the 1.3x400x1.4 = 728mm is really cool but you have an f8 lens at that point
vs a 1.6x400= 560mm.

does the 1d3 have micro adjust?

Yupe, i use something similar (a 1mm thick transparent rubber, 5mm wide and 10cm long), place it against the wall of the barrel in front. It limits me nicely to zoom from 12mm to 22mm. MA is available but for this lens, i don't have to MA at all.
