Can I say how Happy I am with this thing in a post like this? Well I just did.

At first I had my doubts but now after shooting with it for a while I now know what all the hype is all about. From IS to USM to Instant AF (I mean is there a word faster than instant I can say?) This lens locks on focus in a blink of an eye.

I am getting VERY consistent focus with this lens, however I can only compare it to my 1980 something 50mm f1.8 Mk I. I still love that lens though too.

Sorry I just had to say something, and no I don't work for Canon :D

I was really struggling to decide between this lens and the Sigma 17-50mm and kept going back and forth for a few weeks. I ultimately settled for the Sigma and so far I'm happy but I would also have been happy with the Canon I'm sure.

It is a fantastic lens.
No probs with dust behind front element yet.
Much better IQ than 17-40L and hardly any distortion wide angled.
Perfect prime for 7D

This lens is one of the only reasons to stick with crop IMO. The other reason being the extra reach for those bird/plane spotters.

Why can't the FF crowd get an equivalent lens is beyond me. (A EF 24-85 2.8L IS would be dreamy!)

And to anyone considering the purchase: just do it. The 17-55 is THE STANDARD LENS to own on a crop body. Just buy it already.

i've used a 17-55 for a while and yours seems like a sharper copy. :)
Are you shooting 2.8 in most of those?
