Here in the Netherlands in Alkmaar is the yearly "Kaeskoppenstad". A festival where people go back to the year 1573...

These guys are ok for a while. All of the calves will be ear marked with his owners unique mark and then they let them go to grow up.
I think reindeer is just having little stress in these situations, but they are not harmed.. besides this marking with a knife :)

QUOTED IMAGE

lol not harmed my ass - how would you feel if someone pressed a knife into your ear to make a mark? :p it cuts the skin, which scars over permanently. But I know most livestock are marked or branded in some way, I just don't agree with people when they say the animal isn't harmed in the process.

ok, but how many people choose to do that to themselves via piercings and self modification?

That is someones choice, the OP is not saying anything other than it is painful for the animal and that the animal has ZERO choice in it.

Back to photos :)

my first post in this thread. more of a quick snap than a photograph, but i haven't gotten out much yet. i have to say i'm not in love with the jpeg's the camera produces, as they seem to get "smoothed" over too much?

i've shot a few in RAW so far, and as usual, much better textures(and lots to manipulate too).

Question for anybody/everybody here on this above statement. I have seen this several times in this thread and wonder if anybody can expand or comment on this? If this is common, maybe is there a setting that causes this or maybe there is some kind of noise reduction processing going on? I am curious to hear any expansion of this situation.

Before you get too critical just consider that these people are from a totally different way of life, and would no doubt consider a lot of what happens on your doorstep to be totally barbaric as well.

Being "harmed" to that person may be taken as having a different meaning from the way you see it...isn't that what cultural differences are about? Anyway, rather the harm of a quick cut than the mind numbing misery of much of "civilised" society!

Agreed. Farm or country life is much different than city life.

Hey, is this the thread for posting straight-out-of-the-camera iPhone pics? If so, great job everyone! My 5D III is scheduled for delivery tomorrow and I can't wait to join in the fun here. I'll probably "steer" away from the animal cruelty pics though (I'm kidding).

In all seriousness, quite contrary to certain other critical posters, I've been following this thread from the start and have found it an inspiration and a strong draw to get a 5D III of my own. Really appreciate all the contributions here!
