Just sold my 17-40L f/4 and my 70-200 f2.8 IS. All I am looking for is a EF-S lens with IS. Taking pictures at the zoo and outdoors.

I can't decide

- 50mm 1.8 - no IS...Exception because of price.
- EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II
- EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
- EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II

leaning towards the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II.

Why sell the 70-200 f2.8 IS? For a zoom, that focal length is great even on (moreso on) a crop body...

EDIT: Just becuase you have a crop body doesn't mean you have to only stick with EF-S lenses.

So you have a 7D and sold off 2 L lenses for a beginner kit lens? ???

Looks like you're working backwards. Having those lenses on a 7D is a travesty. Invest in better glass and get a cheaper body.

Shouldda kept the 70-200mm f/2.8 ...and maybe added a 1.4x teleconvertor from Kenko.

Among the lenses listed, I urge the 50-250mm for the zoo.

I'd be buying those lenses back if I were you!

However, we have no idea for your reasons for selling. In reply to your post, I'd plump for the 50-250 simply for it's versatility and suitability at the zoo.

Dang, you sold off two fantastic lenses. Don't know why you would sell the 70-200 F2.8 IS and get a 55-250mm.

I am still dreaming to get the 70-200 IS for my 7D.

Well, I would also get the 55-250 for zoo work but will it be fast enough?

The 55-250 should be fast enough for most of your zoo photos. The 100-400L is my zoo lens, and it has the same maximum aperture (f/5.6). I need to crank up the ISO on occasion, but that is no problem for your 7D.

For indoor zoo exhibits, I take along 1-2 prime lenses.

When you have a motgage of $2k a month to pay and have lost your job and begin working at $8 drop in salary and youhave $2.5 k in lens lying around for 1 year not being used, you tell me what you would do? Priorities in life.
Thx for the help... I will get the 55- 250

Sorry to hear about your situation. I hope things turn around for the better soon for you.

For the zoo, get the 55-250mm (out of those listed). It is a very decent lens, just teleconverters are out because of being a EF-S lens. Then look for an 18-55 IS lens. My suggest is look for a used copy of each. You should be able to find a good nifty-250 for about $150US and the IS kit lens for around $100+US (I don't know the conversion for Canada). I don't know if there is an equivalent to Craigslist in Canada, but that is where I'd look.

Thanks for Reading & Good Luck - Jim

If that's the situation, then take my advice from earlier...

"Invest in better glass and get a cheaper body. "

If you haven't used those lenses in a year, maybe photography isn't for you...especially since you have no other lenses listed in your gear. I have no idea why you would suddenly use a 55-250 when you haven't touched the other two L's in a whole year. Sounds like you're just wasting more money. Like you said...Priorities in life.

sorry about the attitude in my previous post. I just am in pain seeing my babies go bye bye. But hey, life is getting better as I just got a Baby girl and to me that`s all that is important right now.

The fact is yeah ...I should get rid of the body and get a less expensive one and so forth, but I just can`t go back to plastic bodies or inferior cameras. My 7D is staying.

I think I will muck around with the 55-250 until something under $400 appears in the used section. maybe a Sigma?

Thx all. :)
