I've been watching 5D3 price for few weeks and it's $3499 everywhere.
Just now, happen to check on eBay and some legit authorized stores are selling at around $3240ish...

Any thoughts on this?

early adopters have a 5D3, 1Dx is about to hit the streets (well, sort of) and the price is softening a little. i don't think it's unusual.

Here are a couple of sample or comparison. I'm sure you'll pick up which one is taken by the D800E version. ;) Not a fair comparison due to different lens and aperture used but I think the acuity is visible to me.
