Thanks everyone for all the support. It will be great to be among the working again, and it will be even better to get a car again when I can. Finally get my life back on track. Should find out tomorrow or the next day when I start. Did the drug test today and its guaranteed to pass since they don't test for alcohol LOL

Congrats! Huge step forward you'll find the journey welcoming & those rough days not so rough if you remember the days you're coming from!

Pretty good for ISO 3200

where did you get it? It was not to be available until end of June?

At a Best Buy.............220 miles away in Albuquerque! No, I am not a complete idiot, my mother happened to be going to Albuqurque, so I checked to see if any of the stores had one. They did, so I bought it and she picked it up for me! Lucked out!

It sounds silly, but, I may have one of the only 40MM 2.8s in the state of New Mexico. None of the other Best Buys, including the one I work at, had any and I doubt the one or two Ritzes or small camera shops got any. Large state, small population.

thanks for the link, it's cool. i tried to calculate though with the following input. 21mm at f2.8 at 5ft distance, i got 1.9ft. in the example above, i think it's way more than 1.9ft.

is there any other factor?

No, not in that calculator.

There are two things though.

a) I think your distance to the focus point is more than 5 ft. There is a difference between 5 ft and 10 ft in the DOF Calculator. It would take guts to focus on the female model's knee and recompose so the background would be more blurred.

b) I suspect that the wide lenses do not blur as fast with distance as the teles do.

That's a nasty looking tripod! Haha! Anyways, pulled the trigger on the amazon $38 tripod and i guess i'll see how i go from there! :D
Will it be able to carry a gripped 60D + 18-200 + 430ex ii? Hehe!

I had my gripped 60D on that same $38 tripod w/o issue...now in time it may loosen up, but for now you should be fine. It's a good starter tripod combo and will give you a chance to see how much you will actually use a tripod and if you will need something better in the future.

That would be Fort Worth as in Fort Worth Cameras. A camera store in Texas.

I believe it stands for Fort Worth (Texas) which is where Vixen lives.

I thank you both :)

I don't see anything here I can't do with the 60D and the nifty... (it's an effective 80 mm f1.8).

I have taken numerous portraits where the DOF is from the tip of the nose to the end of the eyelashes. Frankly, that's not even good portraiture...

There is a level of DOF thinness that a crop can't match the FF, but unless your subject/composition requires it and cannot be achieved otherwise, who cares?

Are you referring to touji's post or is this just a general statement?

I don't know if i've posted this one. My fave shot last Sunday. My wife in the water.

It's fun metering the background to get it to the right exposure, then use speedlight to illuminate the subject. Result, even exposure.

The first line refers to touji's photo.

The second refers to numerous portraits that I shot.

The third line is a general statement.

^^tod that's a gorgeous image the colours are great.
As this thread allows for ot bs I thought I would post some  . I split with my other half last year and have two great kids that stay with me a couple of days a week, well I miss them like mad and do get sad. Today I came home and turned on the comp to start going through my photos from le mans at the weekend and this is the pic that greeted me when I opened Lightroom.
It's moments like this that I realise how great photography is and how much I love to take pics.
