These are great! I love the use of the depth of field and the lighting is perfect!

ok Ryan - I KNOW I don't have even close to the same gear as you - but. How did you get the pic of Rylin in the car? When Ashton's in a stroller being pushed at some of the local 5Ks/8Ks, I'd love to get a similar shot. Instead, I get all blur - like this

IMAGE: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7085/7379815682_9bc9a50315_z.jpg

would LOVE to have at least part of the runner and part of the stroller in focus and not all out of focus

Hey Jenn!

The gear isnt really that important. I got some awesome panning shots with my XSi.

For me, I shoot moving targets with a small aperture (f/11) and about 1/60th of a second. Use AI servo and track with a single focus point on their head. It takes alot of practice. I had to make my 6 months pregnant with run up and down the sidewalk at least 10 times to get a shot I was happy with! Lol! She's a good sport though.

When I pan, i stand with my feet shoulder width apart, parallel with the subjects path of travel, and my elbows resting against my rib cage for support. As your subject approaches put your focus point where you want it and track in a nice smooth motion across your body. Twist at the waist not at your neck. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks Ryan! that's supremely helpful! Next race is on July 4th (with the same runner even!) so I'll have to try again. I'm trying to convince the runner to get out and practice with my son before the race and if so, I may go out as well and practice! hehe :)

Do you by any chance have any of your panning shots from your XSi?

I'll send you some. Theyre mostly motocross shots from 2 years ago, but they turned out good for a newb!!

Ryan - just stumbled across this thread, and visited the start and couldn't stop until I went through all 36 pages. Your project is outstanding, and inspires me to try a 365 or 52 once my little girl turns 1 in November (though I'm already shooting an insane amount of frames of her now!). Can't wait to see the rest of the images!

Great shots! Sadly, I missed Fathers day with my little one. Wife and I went on a 5 day cruise sans Adler while he spent the week with Neena (grandma). Happy Father's day to you!
