Mary came by the studio this week looking to update her headshots and portfolio. She wants to focus on roles primarily around being a mother to teenagers (don't know why) and wanted updated headshots to reflect her in that light.

Commentary is always welcome.

Nice photos. Think he choice of roles is a bit weird as actors should be able to act. She's cutting out alot of potential work.

The eyeliner could use some touchup, it seems to end suddenly. Nice shots though!

Nice shots, I don't really know what to say about the motherly role. I guess you depicted that, overall, pretty well. I would want to see one where she's smiling though.

The goal is not to change your subjects, but for the subject to change the photographer.

Nice shots, well done. The only niggle is that they all have her looking directly at the camera. A little boring.

i agree, i think i'd like to see different expressions too. she isnt showing much range there.

but those critiques on her, the images themself are good.

What, mothers of teenagers never smile?

It would be advisable to capture a range of emotions. "Mother of teenagers" would portend in a headshot to hairstyle and makeup. It might mean using more subtle expressions--no bubblegum silliness--but there should still be a range.

The last picture is not a pose, though, that a mother of teenagers would take.

Beatiful light imo. How many lights? I can see a reflector and possibly one light.

Thanks all.

As for her not smilling and editing:

Actor headshots are intended for casting agents, and come in two types: theatrical and commercial. Theatrical are non-smilling. Commercial are smilling. She does not do commercial work, so we didn't do any of those images. Today's casting agents require minimal touch-up/editing and are looking more and more for no make-up images, and they are interested in seeing the full face not posed portiture.

As for the last image, it is a portfolio image for her for her website, not a casting headshot.

In the second shot she looks a bit older than in any of the others.

Her lips look a bit pursed in all the shots and she's giving the same expression. She seems a bit uncomfortable or unnatural in front of the lens. Did you coach her a little bit to get her to relax a little?
