I would definitely pick up some Zeiss glass. My 50 1.8 G doesn't do a bad job of resolving 36 MPs.

I may do that. I saw a comparison of a IQ180 with a d800E. Considering the cost of the IQ180 the extra resolution is very very expensive. The DR is not better. The d800E pulled more shadow detail out. The consensus appears to be the same.

Nikon hit a home run this time.

I just switched to the dark side. I had a 5dii and a 60d and sold it all and got a d700 and d5100. The 5100 is just to have a backup until more info comes out about the rumored d600.

After only a day i'm pretty amazed a the build quality, ease of control (except for that dang ISO button) and overall layout of the d700. And I can actually confidently use more than the center AF in low light/high contrast scenes. Losing video somewhat stinks but the d700 feels like a stills machine which is what I need. I'm excited to move forward with it.

Bokeh is not as good as the 24G but it's pretty good for the price :)

Anybody have direct experience with the Nikon 70-300VR vs the Canon 70-200 F4 IS? I have heard people say that the Nikon has as good IQ as the F4 IS. True? Or are Nikon owners just jealous?

I've owned both. IMO Nikon doesn't have anything comparable to it, not in that price range. The 70-200 is a tad sharper than the Nikon 70-300 VR and has a much faster AF but look at the cost difference. The Nikon 70-300 VR blows away its Canon counterpart the 70-300 IS, the VR is far superior to the Canon's ancient IS in that lens.

I didn't have the 70-200 f/4L IS, but I did have the non-IS version and currently own the Nikon 70-300 VR.

The Nikon isn't built as well as my old 70-200 f/4L, but it's a very good build for a consumer lens. Optically the biggest advantage of my old f/4L is the constant f/4. The Nikon was a real pleasant surprise, especially in the 70-200 range. Approaching 300mm it's getting a bit softer, but pretty decent. For me it's not significantly different than the f/4L with regards to contrast and sharpness. I've posted this before, but here is an image shot at 230mm and f/5.6:
