I think that the bottom line is that for 90% of amateurs the 7D is probably all the camera they need for any application. Internet hype is driving people to constantly want to upgrade. That being said, I will someday own a 500 f/4 despite the fact that i can get the same images with my 100-400 if I try hard enough.

Get the best you can get and be sure to try to reach the potential of your gear rather than trying to use better equipment to get the better shot. It's all about reasonable compromises.
