Oh my! Fabulous. Absolutely stunning. Does it focus very close or was that just one large flower?

Thanks

Yes, it has close focus. I do not have the lens with me to see the distance. Yes it was a medium to large flower.

Nice lens, fun to work with the old presets.

So I have been thinking about filling in a gap in my lens collection and picking up an 85mm. There seem to be a ton available in this focal length so I figured I would get some opinions here before diving into the hard core research on each.

Pretty much looking at under $300 bucks so that rules out the C/Y 85mm f/1.4 and f/1.2, the Helios 40, and the Takumar 85mm f/1.8 and f/1.9. The few that I have been looking at are the following:

Jupiter 9 (Russian made Zeiss copy with a very smooth bokeh)
Olympus 85mm f/2 (any of the 3 versions)
Zeiss Biometar 80mm f/2.8 (slowest I would like to go but it is a medium format lens which would allow me to use a tilt adapter which would be nice just a little expensive)
Nikon 85mm f/2 AI (don't know much about these but I have heard Nikon never made a bad 85)

Any experience or sample photos would be awesome. I'm sure a couple of you guys have some thoughts on these.

Thanks.

How about the Samyang 85/1.4? You can find this new @ sub-$300 price on flea bay. My favorite portrait lens with buttery bokeh.

The Samyang and it's copies (Rokinon / Bower / Vivitar) are also options but I am a sucker for the feel of a full metal body lens. I also just like the nostalgic aspect of breathing new life into these old lenses. But I am not going to dismiss something new if it's the best for the money.

I have the Jupiter 9 and a favorite but not too sharp at f2. My favorite is a Nikkor 105 2.5 in pre ai, ai or ais. Read about them and you will not be dissapointed. There is not much difference between a 105 and 85 for field of view from my perspective and a lot less expensive.

I've got a question of sorts. Namely, could anyone recommend large aperture primes in the 40-60mm (anything shorter than that is unnecessary, given the rest of my lens lineup, and anything longer than that is just too bloody tight for my taste) range that aren't very sharp and exhibit strong vignetting characteristics and halation and all that. Ones that aren't ludicrously expensive, of course, and obviously ones that have good looking bokeh. Oh yes and said lens should work on a 5D classic(which means many lenses that would otherwise be useable, aren't, because of the mirror hitting the rear part of the lens - I already filed off some metal from the back of one lens to make it useable). I already own a Helios 44-2(the one I filed the back off of), which more or less fits that description, but I'd like to know if there are other options, and exactly what those options are.

In some types of works, more often than not, sharpness is of detrimental value to a photo(in my view, anyway, and since I'm looking for a lens for me, then let's assume that is indeed the case - also, I already have a very sharp large aperture prime with excellent bokeh in that range, namely the Sigma 50mm F1.4, so don't recommend super sharp lenses, for they are unnecessary).

A good photographer can take extraordinary photos anywhere, with any camera and any lens while a mediocre one will take mediocre ones everywhere, with every camera and every lens.
Never limit yourself with what others think you should do. Shoot what you find interesting, exactly the way you want to.

Super Tak 50/1.4 ~= about $100
Or C/Y Zeiss 50/1.7 ~= $150
Or C/Y Zeiss 50/1.4 ~= 300

No, I said lenses that AREN'T sharp and have a strong halation and vignetting effect.

I already have an optically excellent prime in that range, now I'm looking for something a bit different.

OM Zuiko f/1.4 at f/2.8 I think? Gotta love cheap old primes.
