it's backwards compatible with 2.0, and future proof if you decide to upgrade your computer to have usb 3.0

USB 2 or 3 will be around for years due to PCs. It is with FW that you will see vendors stopping to do that interface. When Apple dropped FW on the new MBPs,,,,time to plan accordingly.
