Pat, you are getting seriously sharp images making me wonder if my 300mm might need MA. What I can't see in your EXIF is what distance you are typically shooting the surfers at?

^^ I'm usually a few yards away from the beach and if I'm up at the pier to get that close-up shots I'm pretty much right above them. These are sooc from the 1DMKII files and really amazes how this glass shines with or without a 1.4xII.

Have a Happy & safe 4th to y'all here in the states.

Looking at many of the images posted on here I was getting frustrated that my 300mm f/4 wasn't producing the goods. Several hours of trial and error microadjustment later (+5 dialled in on my 1DIV) and I think this was time well spent. Test shot after MA:

Thanks Sandra. Not certain I've got the adjustments on this lens spot on yet but it's definately better than it was :)

Here's another one from today, Greater spotted Woodpecker (juvenile male):

Thank you both :) I suppose I probably am a pixel peeper, although I never intended to be :) I just like to know that the gear I use is as good as it can be. That way, when the shot goes wrong, I just have to adjust the nut on the end of the camera :)

Mark,
I am a pixelererere.
What was the Fstop on those? It does look thin but as far as getting the MA right, I think you are there.

If I could MA, I think I would set it up at the distance that I on average shoot at and try it there.

I prefer Pachelbels lesser known work, Canon in L and the 99 cent menu club.

Thanks Kevin, f/8 in both cases, I think the lens gives it's best around this aperture. Done deliberately as with a tighter DoF there's less margin for error and I wanted to make sure the lens was as good as possible.
As far as MA goes, I've been putting it off even though I wasn't happy with either of my tele's. Tried it first on my 400 f/5.6 and couldn't get it right so that's back with Canon at present. It's really easy to do and also easy to put back if you aren't satisfied you've made an improvement. I like the fact that my two cameras memorise the MA adjustment for each lens and lens plus TC.

Mark - do you compare your 300 + 1.4x with your 400. Is there a lot of different in the sharpness.

Well, that is an interesting question. At this moment, and bearing in mind my 400 as I mentioned above is back with Canon, I can't answer it.
Theoretically, in the case of these two lenses the prime should be sharper than the prime + TC at around the same focal length. My 400 had issues hence it was sent back.
What I can tell you is that at very short range i.e. about 12 feet away, both of mine produced acceptably sharp results (400mm prime and 300 + TC = 420mm). The reason I knew I had problems was from the results I was getting at greater distances where the errors in focus were more apparent.
All I can say for now is I'll update when my 400 comes back so, if you're still interested, watch this thread and that of the 400 f/5.6 :)
