Hi everyone,

I'm looking for your advice on two bags I'm planning to purchase:

1/ one shoulder bag to carry my laptop (currently, it's a macbook pro 15), 5Dmk2 + one lense (e.g. 35L).
The idea would be to carry this bag everyday. I'm commuting by subway and I feel like I am missing great shots everyday!
I'm looking for a "light" solution and I haven't found anything yet...

2/ one small shoulder bag to carry the 5Dmk2 + 35L + 85/1.8 + 580ex. I was wondering whether the Crumpler 5MDH could be a good candidate.

If you have any idea, I would really appreciate !
Thanks in advance.

Romain

5MDH would be ideal for #2.

Tenba bag is inexpensive and perfect for what you want to do, get the largest one, though. I love my TT Urban Disguise, but it's 2x or more the money. As for the 2nd bag, depending on the kind of bag you like, I recommend the Domke 5XC. I fit my 5D2 with 24-70 attached and one small lens and the 580EX. It's a nice bag and so useful.

Case 1: I can recommend ThinkTank's UD-50. It's perfect for combining the MacBook, the kit you have in #2, a few file folders and business essentials. The large front pocket is also expandable. Great construction, good looks, fairly light and fits perfectly on a roll aboard when traveling.

Case 2: I had almost the exact setup as you and my 5MDH was perfect.

Thank you guys.
I'll have a look at the tenba. Are you sure I would need the largest? ( as mentioned the idea is to have a very limited set of camera gear, i.e. the 5d2 with a 35mm would be sufficient).

The TT looks great but it looks quite big... It seems like he right bag to carry ALL my gear..

Maybe there is a smaller version than the 50. Will see.

Don't buy any Crumplers of ebay they are all cheap clones being sold as the real thing, as soon as they mention oem in the ad they are the fakes.

Checked out Timbuk2's Classic Messenger and Snoop bags? Some are quite expensive (I've been wanting a custom one) but they do have laptop sleeves and you can get the camera bucket so you can switch from a camera bag to a commuter bag very easily.

Plus, I absolutely *adore* that "cinch lock" so you can hike it up and close to your back when scurrying about especially on your bike.

That said, the Small would do you fine. :)

I do not think the weight of the bag will be the issue. Instead of seeking a light bag, why not look for a well designed one that will distribute the weight of all that glass, plastic and metal !!

Or how about a compact camera for commuting.

Maybe there is a smaller version than the 50. Will see.

The TT is smaller in length and height (15x11x7) than a Tumi Alpha Pass medium and my Timbuk2 command (medium) messenger bag. When not expanded it's about 1.5" wider than the Tumi so the UD50 is right there in the ballpark with a business sized computer bag.

I was looking at the Tumi but settled on the TT with it's camera option and great organization.

i have the tenba mini and it holds my 13" toshiba laptop. maybe one size up (tenba small messenger) would be enough.

make sure to get the photo/laptop messenger as thel also have the photo messenger which doesnt have a laptop sleeve.

as for bag #2, take a look at domke bags. i use an f-803 for my 7d with a mounted 24-105 and 10-22mm although you can probably go smaller. try giving jon a pm as hes very knowledgable about domke and helpful too.

Thanks for your replies.

@nwa2 : I have tried several compact cameras and I have always been disapointed... I guess I am spoiled with my 5D mkII.. :)
And I agree that "light" was not the appropriate term... I guess "compact" and "well design" are more inline with what I am seeking.

So, if I try to sum up:

#1
There are 3 alternatives:
1/ tenba small messenger
Seems to be a good option. It's not expensive and seems to do the job.
(not a big fan of the design though.. not very exciting design hehe)
2 / TT urban desguise 50
Looks great also. More expensive but I like the look. I tried to find a store in Paris but it seems difficult.
Definitely a good option.
3/ Timbuk2 Snoop camera messenger.
I have always wanted a Timbuk2 bag but there is no store in France. And knowing the price of those bags, I have always been reluctant to blindly order one on the Internet.
But they look so good..
However, it seems that my MBP will not fit :

Anyone tried this setup in a Tumbuk2 bag?

#2
I think I will go for the 5MDH.
I tried to find a review with my setup but didn't find anything. I hope it will fit (the flash is quite big..)

I have a 5MDH and can fit my 5dii with 35L attached, an 85L and a 135L (all without hoods, though). So I think you can easily fit the 35L, 85/1.8 and your 580 ex in the 5MDH.
