Welcome to the t3i club!
I have the grip and personally it is a good option to have. For everyday shooting I carry an extra battery; for a trip or a photoshoot it does help with vertical shots and not worrying about switching batteries.
As far as lenses, Definitely preference. I'm not made of money so other than the kit lens and 35 f2, I use vintage lenses with an adapter. The 50 1.8 and 40 2.8 are great bang for the buck choices from what I've seen.
What kind of photography were you thinking of working on?
Good luck and have fun!
Pretty much what the others have said. I have the 18-135 mm and have been very pleased with it. It makes a good walk around lens and the image quality is good. I have a grip on mine (Photive) and never take it off. The grip makes the T3i much easier to handle with the heavier telephotos. I used the 55-250mm a lot until I recently got a 70-200mm F4L IS and got some really great shots with it. Very inexpensive, but a great value. Enjoy your new camera.
I ordered this grip from Amazon: Neewer Battery Grip![]()
It had great reviews and was very affordable. I also got an extra Photive battery, car charger, lens hood, lcd screen protector, wireless shutter release, UV filter, polarizing filter, and LensPen. Almost all of these accessories are third party, but with great reviews and the grand total for everything was under $85.
I do like the 18-135 lens, but I definitely want something faster and will probably of with the 50mm 1.8 or maybe the 50mm macro if I can find a good used one. Thanks for all the advice! I like shooting macro, landscapes, architecture, wildlife/pets, concerts/live music, and product photography. I'll be needing a telephoto for the concerts also.
