Any of you guys tried a JJC FB-1 battery pack with a 1DX just out of curiosity?

What is it, and why use it?

Just a battery pack. I was simply wondering how it copes with the frame rate

About two weeks ago I tested a pre production 1Dx. The camera was a last stage model. i.e. almost ready.

I took a shot of a chap standing in a shadowed area in less than ideal light.

As a 1Ds3 owner and a 5D3 user I can quite confidently say that ISO 12800 is the same in noise as the 1Ds3 is at 1600 and respectively the 5D3 at 3200.

So 2 stops better than the 5D3....I got to keep the raw files and took my 5D3 with me for comparison.

ISO6400 is like the 1DS3's ISO800. So again, a three stop improvement over the 1Ds3. Other people did see the files and agreed with those observations.

expect to hear these type of claims for the next six months or so. we heard it all before. "40d at least a stop better than 5d." "5d2 two stops better than 5d." "7d wipes the floor with 1d mark III." yadda yadda yadda...

give it six months or so from the time the 1dx is widely owned and you'll have the truth, which i suspect will be something like..."very close to 5d III, which is almost idetical to 5d II, or maybe just a hair better."

:D

A bunch of comparison are already out on the web showing maybe 3/4th stop better than the 5d3 at some ISO's.

If people want to believe 3 stops or more, I say let them.

Congrats Erik! Let's see some images!

I took a few "first light" shots and wanted to play around with the ISO performance just to see what was up and to get a feel for what I can and can't use.

I'm going to preface this with a few caveats:

  1. I don't really have that much free time - wife/kids/job/etc.
  2. I had a new camera screaming to be played with and learned about
  3. I had to deal with Adobe updates to get CS5 (yeah, I know) to recognize the new 1Dx CR2
  4. I had to reorganize my Pelican to hold the new body
  5. My car overheated after I mentioned that the contents of the trunk were worth 7.5x the value of the car itself
What all that means is that I couldn't find the time to hunt down any ducks, so cats it is. :P

Ours was napping in her bed, under a table, in a relatively dark room. I used the 1Dx and 85L II wide open at ISO 3200, 6400, 12800, 25600 and 51200 to snap some rough shots. Apologies for the awkward angles but she wanted to sleep so I was using one hand to get her attention and holding the camera with the other... poorly.

I used CS5 to open the RAW files, saved them as .jpg (highest quality) and then cropped a 1024x1024 section out of each. After that I resized to 1024x683 and saved that .jpg with highest quality.

3200:

(51200 in the next post)

I did no post processing on these other than to up the exposure a bit in Photo RAW. (I don't know why yet, but all of the images were about 2/3-1 stop underexposed. Operator error for sure.)

The raw files for those who want to play:
