I was on a crop so I need to get use to it :P
If you just have the 50 and 85mm lenses, then a bit of junior high school algebra will tell you what your equivalent field of view will be on each lens going from a crop to a 36mm size sensor. (62.5% of the apparent field of view of your crop sensor).
I can only assume that you have never shot 35mm film - Your 50mm and 85mm prime lenses will have the exact field of view, depth of field, etc. on your 5D2 as they would on a 35mm film camera.
If it was me (and this is totally subjective), if I were to choose one lens and one only between the 50mm and the 85mm for "street photography" in NYC I'd use the 50mm lens - the most "natural" focal length (most like what your eyes see). You can always crop if you want to get more apparent "reach" if you take a photo of something far away (say the Statue of Liberty from lower Manhattan). With 21MP, you have plenty of resolution to do a good deal of cropping.
I started using SLR cameras long before zoom lenses were popular - in fact I don't think I ever saw a zoom lens for an SLR until I was in my 30s. Without computers to help design them they were just novelties that didn't do anything particularly well. There were exceptions like TV broadcast lenses, but they cost more than most very nice houses at that time. The standard focal length lens on virtually every 35mm SLR was a 50mm lens. I knew people who had quite a few lenses and others that only had one lens. I don't think I ever met or even heard of anyone who did not own a 50mm lens.
Peace,
D.
