I'm not sure either one would be enough of an upgrade from the T3i to be worth the money. They're both certainly better, but not enough better, IMO.

You really do have to give your reasons for 'needing' to upgrade!

i have a T3i and i won't be "upgrading" to a T4i. The only reasons to change to 60d, imo, would be the ergonomics or possibly the AF, since both should produce the same or very similar quality images (same sensor etc). If I were to upgrade to another crop I'd go for a 7d (or the replacement depending on price). Personally, I'm struggling to stop myself buying a 5dII as they seem quite affordable right now.

Better depends on your needs.
The 60d will have better battery life, dual wheels for better control,
Larger size and better viewfinder.
The t4i will have better video AF.

What do you need?

I have a T3i, and am quite certain I will upgrade one day, so I've been checking out the new bodies too. Of course, if I wait long enough it might be a T9i that has a 100MP sensor, 20 fps, ISO 1 million, 3D video, and who knows what else...and still be considered "entry level prosumer". ;)

The T4i is nice, and I would certainly buy one over the T3i if I was shopping for a new camera today, but I don't think it is worth upgrading from one to the other.

The 60D is also better than the T3i overall, but again not enough to upgrade.

I think the successor to the 60D or 7D will be the best choice for an upgrade from the T3i.

This assumes you want to stay APS-C (1.6) sized. Any switch to 1.3 or FF can be considered an upgrade if that is your intentions, although I'd say only the last one or two models in each would be satisfying (e.g. the 5Dc was great in its day, but the lower res sensor would drive me nuts, I think).

As always, IMHO, YMMV...

I can't imagine either of those cameras do anything that the T3i can't, which makes me wonder why the "need"? Where is the T3i falling short for you?

The T4i looks to be a great camera in the Rebel line. It has many new features that even bests the 60d.
Having said that, if you are shooting stills, I doubt you will see much difference b/t the t3i and t4i. The all X-type AF is gonna be great when you shoot tricky moving subjects. 5fps is great too. But the big upgrade is its hdslr that allows continuous AF.

I've got a 60D as backup to a 5D3 and have just ordered the 650D (T4i) for the wife. Until I get it through though I can't really tell you if there's much difference. The ISO ability of the 650D looks very good on paper and is one of the main reasons for buying but I'm looking forward to trying the touchscreen too and seeing how responsive it is under load.

The 60D seems to be the winner in ergonomics for me though, as I'm so used to the dual dial bodies and top screen and although I didn't think I'd like the moveable screen I actually find it easy to use and very handy.

Mod,

I do find, on POTN, those who hate the flip screen the most are those who have never shot with a camera that has one. I started out with a G12 so I was used to it. I find I don't use live view as much as I thought I would with my 60D but that is probably because I don't do as much macro yet. I'm sure the ratio will change when I get the 100L macro.

I don't have a camera with it yet, but I don't find that I would like the flip screen so much for macro, as for astrophotography. The camera gets at some really awkward angles when shooting stuff high in the sky.

I use the flip-screen on my T3i a lot more than I would have thought. For those awkward shots where I'm trying to get a group photo from a bit higher than eye-level and a ladder/chair isn't handy, to astro work, to more awkward shots underneath an aircraft or inside an avionics bay (I use it at work), even yesterday when I was trying to shoot a couple of eagles sitting high in a tree and the tripod positioning made it way easier to use the flip-screen. (Shots of eagles were pretty lousy, btw, I suspect because the sky was overcast and full of glare compared to the dimly lit birds. Or sometimes I just can't take a good pic.)

Seriously if you think you need to upgrade from a T3i to a T4i, you really need to upgrade your skills as a photographer!

As has been said, it would be interesting to know what it is that makes you feel a "need" to "upgrade".

Peace,
D.

Wow, what a nice picture! You must have a really great camera!
