Hey guys, just after some advice on hiring a lens.
I am off to a motor racing event in a couple of weeks and am thinking about hiring a 70-200mm 2.8 IS with a 1.4 extender or a 300mm 2.8 IS.
I have a 7d and limited experience.
I will have access to most areas of the track and just wanted the best lens for practising some panning and also fast shutter shots.
I will also probably take my 24-105mm ( or 17-40mm) for any shots when I am in the pits and very close to the cars.
Any advice would be very much appreciated and also please feel free to recommend any other telephoto lenses you think might work - most lenses are available to hire at my local shop but obviously do not really want a 500mm or 600mm to lug around :)

The 300 f/2.8 is a great lens for motor sport but so it the 70-200. You will need to think where your shooting from and what you think your will need.

Keep in mind the 70-200 will be alot easier to pan because its more compact and less bulky obviosily.

If the shop has it you might want to give the Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 a go. Also maybe a second body for a shorter lens in place of changing lenses. Many shots are lost due to changing a lens and trying to stuff back into some sort of case.

here's how i'd look at that - 300 2.8 5.6 lbs, 70-200 2.8 3.2 lbs. which one do you want to be lugging around? i personally believe the 300 2.8 is one of Canon's best lenses, but it's heavy.

Thanks for your advice peoples.
Great call on the weight, I will be at the track for around 8 hours so maybe the 70-200mm would be a better option.
I could get my hands on a second body but it would have to be my sisters 350d - still ok for shots in the pits I guess.
Thanks again

What about the 70-300L? It is even lighter and more compact than any of the options you have listed, it is super sharp with great colors and contrast, has the latest IS with mode 2 for panning, fast AF, and a good versatile zoom range.

I assume it will be during the day? Maybe think about the 70-200 f4 as it is half the weight of the 2.8
and is a sharp lens. Not sure of your finances but you could pick one up on flee-bay for about $550 non is

I prefer to be in the bush with the animals than a crowded city.

Well I hired the 70-200mm L IS 2 and what a lens!!
At the side of the track it was great and from above the pits it was perfect.
I didnt have any other lenses on me and wish I had of taken another body with my 24-105 for in the pits and around the cars when they were close.
Also an extender (maybe 1.4X) would have been great on the 70-200 as some of the shots I needed just a little more length.
Here are some of my pics
