Dont they charge for membership or their meetups though?

Usually no charge for joining but some meetups have a fee and some are free. Depends on the content and meetup sponsor.

The Sac zoo kind of sucks except for the bird area. Most of the animal's enclosures block any straight on shots. So, unless you like cage in the foreground... I'd vote for "something/anything" else

I've only been to the SACTO zoo once but thought it was pretty good.

guess I missed those two exhibits... I got a few good shots, but mostly I was disappointed. The lions were playing with empty cardboard boxes, and like 90% of the angles had cages. After seeing your shots, I'll go back again. Thanks for sharing

I don't remember a fence in the way on the first shot. There are fences on many of the exhibits and I was shooting through one for the tiger. There are techniques for making a fence less obvious. (external link) You can see a slight blur in the tiger photo caused by the fence.

We had a meetup back in '08 that went to a nature reserve along the American River then to Old Town SACTO but there must be lots of stuff up in that area. There is a wildlife reserve off of 99 just south of Yuba City I'd like to check out when there are lots of birds but don't know enough about birds to know when that is. I'll be up that way again this weekend on our way to a cabin near Butte Meadows and then in Yuba City Sunday morning.

Hey Becca, you in Citrus Heights (95621)? I grew up there. Well for my teen years anyway.

I'm in Roseville too and always looking for new friends to play with photography and take it to the next level. I feel like I'm done with most of the book learning and now need to spend more time behind the camera snapping shots. If someone were in the area and willing to meet and go shoot some things and events and compare contrast discuss etc. I'm down ;)

September 6th is still a ways off, but I'd love to attend the Sac air show with another person interested in taking awesome pics and comparing notes/assisting each other making the most of it...

http://www.californiacapitalairshow.com (external link)

I went to comic con recently in Sac and found my skills on impromptu inside lighting shots lacking... I still have lots of hands on learning to do. I think I need to take a class or find someone else into it enough to want to go to events to experiment with their photography skills and compare notes whe taking it to the next level. If anyone is down for air show in Sept, hit me up ;)
