Don't know if I would necessarily categorize it as an "upgrade". They are different camera's designed for different specialties. I have both. I use the 1D for my sports shooting and it is spectacular for that. I use the 5D for my portrait work and the for rare occasion I can do some fun landscape work. The 5D is spectacular for those.

Specifically what were you wanting to know?

I have a 40D and I went to a 5D. I love the FF but I miss the crop factor some. I was thinking of selling the 40 & 5 and go for one of these or a MKIII. Just not to sure. Right now I just do landscapes and stuff, but my daughter is 7 and is talking about soccer and stuff. So I was thinking of the 1D series since the 1.3 crop factor would kind of be the best of both worlds in a sense. Maybe I am wrong.

Harvey,

I have obtained better results by doing so, just take it out and find what works for you. My first delight came started when I switched to the * back focus setting, for me it was easier to use the camera. I think you might be able to Google MK IIn settings. IIRC Fred Miranda had some suggestions as did Sports Illustrated. Go out and shoot as much as you can!
